Beenthere: you are correct in thinking a narrower tire with less flotation will give better traction. Nebraska testing concluded a narrower, taller tire was more advantageous to traction than a shorter fatter tire. The longer footprint will give better traction than the wider footprint and thus the taller the tire, the better the traction.

That will vary based on the soil conditions. Some times you need a little more float...

Did the guys who cut the driveway attempt to change the grade? Many places won't allow that steep of a driveway for fire fighting equipment. No fire fighting equipment means home owners insurnace is tough at best. Kind of suprises me.
