I just bought a 1978 massey ferguson 230 and was wondering what these levers are for. One lever has a hose that is coming off the back prolly for rear power up but not sure if it has power both ways or will I need to hook up the other lever for power down. I have looked all over the internet and havent found anything about them. It looks like I could hook up a line in the front and one in the back and have power up and down but not sure.
Any help would be great.
Thanks Gene

It appears that that valve is used with SA cyl, as the other work ports are capped, which is what you do when using SA cyl with DA valve.

I would agree that both levers are set up for one way cylinders, i.e. power up-gravity down. Connecting to the front port with another hose should give you the two way set up, i.e. power up-power down. Do not use both valves to operate one cylinder. Yes it could be done in theory, but it is not practical and it is wrong.

Let the debate begin....

Can you describe what the two hoses go to, or operate?

Well I did find out some things , the valve on the left runs one hose that dont do much, the left one operates the 3 point. But there is the regular slide handles for the 3pt. There is only one hose with a quick coupling coming off the valve.
If it would work I would like to run a cylinder for the rear blade swing adjustment off one side of the valve and use the other side for something else. But the side with no hose overrides the 3pt sliders.

Since that valve appears to be a DA valve, there is no reason you can not use a DA cyl to operate a swing cyl for power out and in. Any idea of the hyd pressure in your systems?

Have no clue on the pressures. I will try to get ahold of some gauges.

I couldn't get a large view of your pictures (thanks to rural dialup) but the assembly looks to be the style that MF had that allows 3 point OR remote. If so, than one lever is a selector, 3 pt or remote. The other lever controls one way remote, one way for pressure, other way for release if I remember right.

Just looked at the picture. Looks different that I remember. I still think the left spool would be the selector valve. The spool on the right certainly is shaped like a 2 way with that cap towards the front.

What he was asking was whether he could use the valves as a DA valve. One work port on each valve is capped off.

MF made a "adaptation" to the 3 pt system of several models to include remote hydraulics. The system was designed so that the operator had to select between 3 pt OR remote. One of the biggest gripes of those operators was that they couldn't use both systems at the same time.

From the description of hyp7, I am pretty sure that the left lever (as seen from sitting in the seat) is the selector valve to switch between 3 pt or remote. That valve can't be used for anything else.

I talked to a MF135 owner and he has a similar system which gives him one remote system and does use two way (two hoses).

As far as using a positioning cylinder on a backblade, I guess you could try. That system would be "dead" while switched to 3 pt. I don't know if it would stay put or not.
