Notice!! Hard Drives Fail! In Pairs!

The cloud of ill fate passed over me this weekend. The disk drives in my primary home PC and in my notebook both failed catastrophically without warning within 4 hours........OUCH. Must have been my turn.

Not even SpinRite could revive either of them.

Backups were semi-current, didn't loose too much. Just enough to be mad. $200 and 10 hours later I'm back in business.

Moral of the story......don't get slack on your backups. To CD, another drive, web, whatever. A hard drive is a mechanical device and it will fail one day, maybe without warning.

This weekend I was the Bug.

For several years my wife and I owned a business where we had a number of computers networked, we had computers at home, and at the time, we had two kids in college who each had computers.

Nearly every year about the time of the autumn and spring equinoxes we would experience two or three non-recoverable hard drive crashes within days of one another. Usually a couple in the shop, and one of the kid's computers. We had few other hard drive destructive crashes during the year.

I'm not really superstitious. And, I have more than just a little bit of electronics training. The crazy hard drive problem went on for about 5 or 6 years.

I began to think that it happened during the time of the year when we went from very controlled temperatures during the heating/cooling season to enjoying open windows.

I heard from one sys admin that when buying set of HD to buy from different sources.

The idea was they were not transported together and they dont have similar damage done to them and they fail each in different time.
