What temp should this tractor run at? I was mowing some heavy stuff yesterday and she got hot. I am sure that cleaning out the radiator will solve this issue, but I don't know what normal is.

Also, the underside of my fuel cap fell of into the tank, the part with the gauge float. Does this happen much? Does it need to be replaced? The plastic over the fuel gauge fogged over a month after I had the tractor, so it was of no use anyway.

Thanks guys!!

Assuming the correct thermostat is installed, it should hover on either side of 80C when working in the power band. If not, troubleshooting is required. Verify correct thermostat temperature range, verify thermostat is functional. Same with radiator cap. OE caps release pressure about 4 psi. Equivalent replacements under 7 psi are hard to find. Most often though, the problem is simply clogged radiator fins, usually the bottom half. They're very very delicate though, and should only be cleaned out from the back (engine) side. The safest way to do this is to actually remove the radiator from the tractor.

A new level-indicating fuel cap isn't expensive, I'd be more concerned about getting the old one out of the tank.

The gauge comment is confusing though, as most tractors now come with a cluster gauge. If yours has individual gauges, all the better. Just replace it.

When you say she got hot ..... do you mean it over flowed out the radiator or the temp gauge went more than half?

The piece in the fuel tank prob want hurt anything as long as it does not effect fuel flow to the injection pump......... maybe you can fish it out with something??

Make sure the fuel cap seals.......

The tractor's temp gauge starts at 100 F and goes up to 220 F. It usualy stays around 175ish in just driving around or light mowing. It shot up to 200 while mowing the thick stuff and stayed there for a while. It finally spiked at 220 when I shut it down. Only then did it overflow. Everything on the tractor is stock. I just don't get to use the tractor enough. It is 4 years old and I just ran it up to 42 hours sunday.

The fuel cap does still seal and I did fish out the floating unit from the tank. I don't think that's going to be a problem.
The gauge that fogged up is on top of the gas cap and not on the dash.

Thanks for the info!!!!

Interesting, I didn't realize that Northern installed Farenheit temperature guages. Like I said, they come with 80C (Centigrade) thermostats. That means on a properly operating cooling system, the working temp should hover between 80-85C. That's 176-185F on the Northern gauge. If yours is running higher under load, I again recommend you check the radiator fins for blockage AND consider putting on a new pressure cap. It's important to put a low pressure cap on there, like the 7psi cap I mentioned before. AND check to make sure that Northern actually put at least a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water in the radiator. Right off the boat, those tractors got nothing innem but dirty water.

FWIW, I bought a pair of $10 coolant recovery kits from JC Whitney. One for the 454, one for the 354. Finding space under the cowl was challenging, but they're both installed and working fine. Haven't put a drop of antifreeze into either in over six weeks
