I am about to do some work on my wife's 2001 GMC Yukon XL. It has 153K miles and I want to do these things:

shocks
front end work if needed
alignment
brakes
tires

Not NTB - belt, hoses, transmission service, flush coolant

I have bought tires from NTB and maybe had a front end alignment. They sell Sensatrack shocks, seems like these are Monroe. Are these good shocks? I want it to have the ride it had when new - not a stiff ride by a more heavy-duty shock. Thought maybe NTB would cut a deal for so much work to be done as opposed to taking it here and there.

Would you trust NTB for alignment or front end work, or should I take it to a front end specialty shop for this work? There is one in Dallas, but its not near as handy (across town) as the NTB store which is near my office. I used the specialty shop once on my old truck and thought they did a great job.

Alan, like many franchises, each NTB is only as good as the management that runs it. I have been very happy with the one in Grapevine, TX, but wasn't too pleased with one I used in Irving, TX because they sent me out with all my tire pressures different and wrong on my 3/4 ton pickup and lost a couple of tire lugs, hiding it by putting on the hubcaps. If possible, check with someone who has used them. The Grapevine store found a leaking rear axle seal on my truck and repaired it the next day for a reasonable price. It has never been a problem since. NTB's prices are very competitive, but the quality of work varies from store-to-store. Probably the same thing can be said of many other tire service franchises.

I have used NTB for alignments in the past on a couple of vehicles, and everything seemed fine. Have also used Monroe Sensatrac struts/shocks on my Mazda MPV with good success. 40K miles so far and no issues. They come with a lifetime warranty, so if the part fails you may be out labor only.

Personally, I'd find a local privateer by asking around. I really don't trust the chain operations...I learned this during my car dealer service dept days..man could I tell you some frightening stories. i've even threatened to call the state police on them ( not going to say which of the chains)..They back down in a hurry.
