NYC Fireman\'s shirt
For the past week I have been wearing tee shirts each day that in some way commemorates 9/11. I just seem to have accumulated several different designs and just decided to start wearing them for a week before the one year anniversary.
My wife and I were scheduled to attend an antique show in Canada. I picked out the least demonstrative design to wear for the day. It was a blue shirt with the New York City Fire Department shield embroidered over my heart.
I never expected the reaction from the Canadian people we encountered. I had worn this shirt a dozen times in New York State and never had anyone comment. It started right at the customs booth with “I like your shirt, are you a NYC fireman?” That question was asked so many times that day by venders, shoppers and even the guy that directed us to a parking spot. I would tell them no I am not a fireman but I am wearing the shirt to show how much I appreciate them. The support I felt from our neighbors to the north was strong and direct.
As we were driving back into NY, I wondered what would have been different if I could have answered the questions with “Yes, I am a NYC fireman.”
