Hi,
First post on here..
The last few times I've used my tractor I've noticed a loud straining or whining noise when steering. It only happens occasionally (say 10-20 times an hour) and only lasts for around 1-2 seconds before stopping again. It's definitely not a metal-on-metal noise, and sounds more like the hydraulic pump or other component straining somewhere.
My tractor is a Jinma 254, around 10 years old but only a couple of hundred hours on the clock. All the fluids were changed out at the start of the season and so should be fresh. On this tractor, the steering has power assist provided by the main hydraulic pump, via a demand type diverter valve which switches the hydraulic fluid into the steering valve/vane pump when the steering wheel is moved in order to provide the power assist.
There's no noticeable problem (ie lack of power/sluggish etc) with the steering or 3pt linkage when this happens. Neither is there any sign of hydraulic oil leakage. Other than this occasional noise you wouldn't know there's a problem, but I treat it as a warning sign that something is about to break and would rather not have any surprises when I'm using it!
The other thing I've noticed is that when this noise occurs if I take my hands off the steering wheel it stops (even with wheels turned already)- put my hands back on and turn ever so slightly and it resumes. So it seems to only occur when the power assist is kicking in.
I'm going to check the state and level of the hydraulic oil at the weekend but I don't think that's the cause. Would air in the system cause this noise? Seems a bit of a stretch for air to be a problem though and in any case the hydraulic system should be self bleeding.
Seems to me that it's either a problem with the demand type diverter valve, or perhaps more likely the steering valve/vane pump itself. But I'd rather avoid taking those out to inspect until I've eliminated everything else.
Curious if anyone else has had similar experiences, or failing that has any practical tips on taking out these pieces from a Jinma 254.
Thanks in advance
