Is this one of those starters with the pie shaped brushes that go in from the end instead of the side? If so I made a sheet metal "fork" that would hold them into the brush holders while I gently slide the end plate over the shaft. Having the armature up just a little helped as well.

Thank's for the reply . The starter has 4 reg brushes that come in from the side of the end plate . I did however get it back together . I should have made a video of of it but didn't think about it till i was done . To make it short , I used paper clips , bent pieces of them into a staple looking shape that would hold the brush's back and hook over the outside of the end plate therefore having both hand's free . I then just put the shaft in and pulled the holders out and finished the assembly , worked real well , any wire stiff enough to bend into the shape and hold the spring's back will work . Maybe this will help someone else out .
