I get my grease from a mid-west distributor. I use the NH "blue" EP "extreme pressure" moly for my FEL and I use Kendall Tough Tac II (red) moly for spindles and wheels etc. that are not under extreme pressure. The distributor will talk tech on grease with you for hours. I only wanted to know what he recommended, since he at lease comes off as knowing a considerable amount about grease.
He showed me the difference between some of the cheap "no name" grease and his Tough Tac II. He stuck his finger into the grease and then pressed his thumb into the glob. When pulling his finger and thumb slowly apart he noted how far apart his fingers got before the line of connecting grease parted. With the "cheap" grease, almost no grease clung between his finger and thumb. With the high moly tac stuff, it streached almost an inch before it wasn't any longer connected between his finger and thumb. His point was that the better grease would cling to the bearings or other metal and not just fall off as easily. He said that the cheap grease has a high parifin base and will harden and fall off more easily.
Oh yeah, JD, NH, Pennzoil, and Cat grease came from the same plant he said. He also supplies TSC stores and they "private label" some quality grease and also some cheap stuff. That really outa confuse people. Just when you think you can make a statement like TSC grease is poor quality, you may buy a tube that is of the highest quality!
