Of the 3, which is best, and why?

I ran a 4' rough cut mower with a 15hp Shibaura, and a 5' rough cut mower with a 24 hp John Deere. A f footer is the right size for any of the tractors you are considering. The John Deere 790 is an unsynchronized transmission much like a 1950s automobile.

Thanks airbiscuit. Can you elaborate on your last post a little? Are you saying the 790 would be ok with a 5 foot mower on hilly terrain? What model is your 24 JD?

I had a John Deere 850 with a similar transmission. That is functional but old technology. I would much prefer the Massey 1532 to the John Deere 790 for your purposes features and price.

All 3 tractors are wider than 48", so I would recommend a 5' mower.

Thanks for the clarification airbiscuit...Do you think there's something more simple, and better about the older technology? When I drove the 790 today, it was smooth. It just worked.

I have had all types of tractors and transmissions.

Unsynchronized transmission - durable, but grinds between shifting gears, unwieldy for loader work
Synchro shuttle - durable and efficient use of power. Decent for loader work
Glide Shift transmission - durable - like a clutchless shuttle
Hydrostatic - durable - easiest to use - best for loader work - just about everybody's first choice for a Compact Tractor

Once you try out the hydro, the 790 will seem like an old truck

Another for the Massey. It should handle 5’ cutter ok, especially if you don’t let it get to high. In tall stuff take it slow and you’ll do fine. Fluid fill the tires for added weight/traction.
