Is five more horsepower. My local Century dealer quoted me $11,500 on a new 2003 model 2535. The price on a 2004 model 3040 was $14,500. Aside from the year model difference we are only talking 5 hp difference. Is it of that much value to have the extra hp?? I am currently using an 8N Ford so I guess anything is an improvement over what I have now.

My place is 40 acres with about 10 acres planted and another 10 in pasture land, the rest is in mature timber. The main implements I use currently are a bushog and a five foot disc set and expect that is about all I would use in the future. I would sure like to save a few thousand dollars, but I don't want to end up underpowered and regret buying too small of a tractor. Thanks!

ask your self this, how well did u take care of things with the 8n, the 2535 should be enough for the implement u stated u use.as it is (if i am not mistaken) at least 10 0r 12 hp more than the 8n + it is 4wd. if it is not a financial burden, and u feel better about it spend the $3000 and go bigger. a lot of times hp is not the issue, sometimes mass and weight have a lot to do with accomplishing certain tasks.

It boils down to your finances. It's tough to tell the difference in 5HP but you will be glad you have it. Resale more than likely is not an issue. Most guys keep their tractors for a long time. I guess I look at it this way, 1 year knewer, no big deal, 5 HP more-hey great and $3,000 over a twenty year period is didley. Get the bigger one if you can handle it. When I was buying I wanted a 25 hp, it was only about $300.00 more to go to the 29 HP but I really wished I would have gone up to the 33 but that was another 1300.00 over the 29 and I just had to draw the line someplace. OK I rambled here, just get the larger one!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

5 HP would probably allow you to run the next larger size rotary cutter (bushog) if you wanted. And it would pull/run any other implement just a little easier. That may or may not be of any value to you.

Like most of us I had a similar decision to make with each tractor purchase. In each case I opted for the higher hp version and have not been unhappy with that choice. With the higher hp version of any tractor you just don't work the machine as hard doing any job and as others have pointed out you can run larger implements. Of course 5hp difference is a lot more % wise if your talking a 25hp class machine vers a 75hp machine. On ag tractors at least, the number I find much more revealing is the "% torque rise" number which is how the engine behaves when lugged down. A higher number represents a engine than handles significient increases in load better. On a NH TN75 the % torque increase is 36% and you can definately feel it when the machine is lugged down.
Of course as always it the use and $$ that make the final decision.
Good luck

I am replacing my 8N with a Mahindra 2615. I only have 7 acres. If I had 40 acres, 10 to mow, I would do something different. I would want 2 tractors. A small tractor (JD2210, 4010, BX2230, B7510, TC18, MF2300 Kioti CK20, Mahindra 2015) with a FEL and a large tractor (I'm think'n Perkins powered MF with a 8ft hog) for mowing and planting.

If SWMBO will only allow one tractor, get the biggest, highest HP you can afford. If you can afford the 3040 get it.

I agree with others, HP size vs what you want, most of your stuff is mature wods, then I would think that logging it out will require some HP for pulling a 20' log will mean the larger one. also if you want so get that extra HP and still spend less then take a look at the new china import stuff, there are several brands to choose fomr JINMA seems to be most popular, (nortracs, farm pros and others, lots others, also new line of KAMAs and such. usually can be had for less than 10 grand for the 35 hp stuff with FELs.
