I passed a gas station the other day, not far from my house. I noticed they had a sign out that said they had off road diesel. What is the difference between off road diesel and the diesel you normally see at the pump? I was going to call and see if the price was cheaper vs the normal stuff if it is ok to run in our Bobcats. Do any of you know the answer to any of these questions?

Higher sulfur content and no road taxes added. Red dye is added to differentiate between the two. It will be fine to run in your equipment.

May or may not have higher sulfur content from what I remember- it depends on the state i believe

Around here the difference is the dye and no road taxes (state = $0.175). BUT typically the price difference is less than the state taxes..

You learn something new every day. I did some searching and found this Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel Makes Official Debut for Most Off-Road Uses This Summer | Environmental Observer | AGC - The Associated General Contractors of America

From what I can tell both on and off road diesel have been USLD since June 1, 2010. The pump where I get my red dye diesel isn't labeled that way but I guess it is.

Here in Michigan off road diesel has been ULSD for over a year. Which means that I have to 1oz of 2-stroke oil per gallon of fuel so my injection pumps don't burn out on my older equ.

But other than the dye its the same as on road diesel. The reason for the dye is fer them to tell if you are running off road diesel on road which is a Big Fine.

Most places that sell off road diesel give a extra $.10 a gallon off if you get over 150 gallons. Last summer buying over 150 gallons at a time my price was 20 to 35 cents a gallon less than the on road pump price with free delivery to my place. Which was good as I spent over $3900 in fuel last year.

To be EPA compliant if it is advertised as "off road diesel" it must be Ultra-low sulphur. Same fuel as "road fuel", just has a red dye and less tax.

3*See 1*.
4*See 1*-4*.

1*1*Higher sulfur content .
No tax added. Red dyed to differentiate between the two. It will be fine to run in your equipment.
1*Both are ULSD so sulfur content is the same in each .

..
1*All fuel was switched from high sulfur to ULSD by 2010.

1*Rite on .But it's suprising how many aren't aware of that .:cool:
2*I would not add motor oil so I use PS in the white bottle.

I only use off road diesel, but also add c-tane booster a qt. bottle goes a long way, and seems to help with all diesels.

PS the tax is 35 Cents here in oklahoma, and can really add up. plus it's not used on the road anyway.

Here in Manitoba, Canada, I save about 11 cents per litre with dyed diesel/gasoline on road tax. That is 41.6 cents per gallon for you non-metric people.
