Off subject 3116 caterpillar top kick. fluid quest

I just bought a 92 topkick with a 300hp 3116 cat. I was gonna go thru and change all fluids etc.. Is there any good transmission fluids out there to run. I'm thinking chevron has a good ESI one. I have no specs to go off of yet i got a manual has various medium duty oil specs. But i've not located it yet. It's a 5 spd with 2 spd axle.

Also anyone know the torque etc.. of the 3116 92 issue? i'm coming up with 760-800 going off cat's website not sure what issue yr that was.

Also anyone know changine the GR of the rear on the MD topkicks if it has a mechanical or electrical tach that reads off transmission??

I've never worked/seen a topkick tho i've worked on IH and FL before. Thanks in advance.

Chevron makes an excellent 75 or 80/W90 semi synthetic gear lube for both the rearend and trans. (can't think of their name for it).
Torque figures sound about right but I don't know at what rpm peak torque occurs. Get the ser# and arrangement # off of the engine data plate, call your Cat dealer and they can give you the specs-sometimes they are on the data plate. I would probably adjust the valves. You have to have a special $700 kit to adjust the injectors if they haven't been done in 50-75,000 miles. It is a good engine but not Cat's best by far. Engine block is made like a car, no removeable cylinder liners like a big bore diesel.
Don't understand your last question. The electric tach runs off of the alternator. The speedo runs off of the back of the trans..

Thanks what type tool is required is it like a special clicker wrench like on cummins or special wrench. I've only worked on 3406e engine before.

The last question was that how is the speedo run off of. I didn't know if it was mechanical or electric.

It's still sitting up north going go get it next weekend. I've not seen it my dad went and bought it. He wanted me 2 run thru it. Thanks for info i figured someone had one on farm or something. thanks

I would be willing to bet it has an Allison behind the Cat. use Dexron III, Mercon.

Allisons have a habit of shearing the welds on the flexplate. I believe there is a retrofit for that.

It has a roadranger 5 spd. I looked up the spec on it the other day. I'm gonna go get it this weekend. I think i'm gonna try and find Chevron Delo ESI fluid. I tried before with no luck most oil distributors around here are a joke.. can't get them 2 order or find anything. I may end up going 2 cat or like international/peterbuilt. I think it said it takes 50w or like 75/90w oil. I printed out the specs somewhere. The 4th gear is reversed on it giving a overdrive transmission from a reduction of 1.29 to an overdrive of ~.76 that's gonna be the hard part remember 5th 4th and 4th's 5th..

If it has a Roadranger, it will have a factory fill of Mineral oil.

We have 55 gallon drums of it at the shop. Monday, I'll get you the spec and part number.

The speedo is electrically driven off of the back of the trans.. The injector adjustment is not a "clicker" like the Cummins you mentioned. The 3116 Cat injectors work off of a "rack" like the old Detroit 53,71,and 92 series 2 cycle engines. This kit contains all of the tools and gauges necessary to adjust the injectors seperately and then in synch together. You can adjust the valves but might be easier to have the injectors done by someone who has the proper tools. You might find that even though it is an OD trans, that in later years there has been work done to the trans tops so that high gear is still back by the seat and not by the dash. The 75W90 semi synthetic would be a good choice in the trans and 2 speed rearend. If you have never heard a 3116 before, they all sound like they have a miss at an idle-no shake-just by my ear they are not smooth thru the exhaust note.

Thanks all i've worked on old driptroits before so i've prob. adjusted one like it before i've never run into one of these.

My poor powerstroke is on it's last leg. It never runs smooth surges and all.

I'll have see what i got. I thought someone tho might have one or know of one and just asking around kinda figuring out what i need 2 do.

We have one and only one truck that has a 3116 it has been a downer. Lots of blow by and use lots of oil. GMC stopped using the little 3116 and only uses the 3126 I think. The 3116 were made to be used in small fire engines and stuff and tend to be a little light for heaver trucks. We have a C-12 in another truck and there is no comparison. When we are stopped at the truck stop fuel island we often get a comment of: Is that a Jap job” our response with pride no that is a CAT, but it sure does sound foreign. So we are thinking of replacing our 3116 with a little over 100,000 on it but it has worked hard and it is asked to carry the load very fast down the road. The blow by is bad but then again if you had 32,000 pounds strapped to you since day one you too would have blow by! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

PS: Ours has 250 HP with a bad **** Allison 6 speed push button electronic transmission.
