I'm hoping to get feedback from someone that been responsible to for maintenance of larger offices. The office where I work is 36 years old and still has the same carpet. I'm wondering if this over the life expectancy for carpet or not. My cubicle has a hole in the carpet from wear. I'm thinking that maybe management might consider new carpet, my floor is approximately 7500 sqft. Do the generic office roller chair wear the carpet faster than foot traffic? I will surely get verbally beat up for even suggesting a capital expenditure (thought maybe this a maintenance item) My employer is no different than anyone else I've ever work for in that office maintenance is the last to get funded. bjr

36 years old? WOW! I'd guess 15 is max. Many commercial sites have switched to the large carpet tiles so the heavy wear points can be replaced as needed. As for your chairs, most use the "carpet" wheels...is your chair 35 years old now too?:) If that's the case you might want to tell your employer that they are at risk for medical related litigation...

36 year old carpet??? That has been depreciated twice. There are some great industrial grade office flooring options. The carpet tiles are great. You can have cube areas a different color.

36 year old carpet? Man they dont make it like they used to i guess. Long as Ive ever got out of carpet was 20 years and even then it was 5 years overdue.

To heck with the carpet! Someone needs to inspect the elevator cables, brakes, safety devices and motors!!!!!

And then maybe should conduct an air quality test too? 36 years old might have used insulated duct-board (but that fiberglass got air-borne a long time ago and is probably resident in somebody's lungs by now so you're safe). How about a water test? I've seen cheap landlords but I think yours wins.

All the responses are good. Management does keep elevator working properly (they don't want any wasted time getting to our work stations). I'm gonna retired in five more years, so, as long as I don't fall thru the floor, I'm okay. bjr

Doesn't Ronco make a product to repair the holes in carpet?

I have Olefin (sp?) carpet in part of the house that was salvaged back in the eighties from my Dad's company offices. It is wearing extremely well and is nice and soft.

The carpet downstairs is Solution Dyed Nylon, also a commercial carpet put in in the ninties. It looks good, wears well but feels like a brillo pad.
