Tractor
Kubota L3130
My new L3130 has about 9 hours on it. Obviously, it still has the factory dino oil in the crankcase. The cold New England temps will be settling in soon and I probably will not have my first 50 hours on the tractor until the dead of winter. Should I simply leave the stock oil in during the cold season or change it out early to avoid the cold starts? I have no clue what the pour point of the stock oil is. Once I get by the break-in period I plan to use a synthetic for year round use. The tractor is stored in a hoop shelter.

Call the dealer to see what it is filled with. If its 10-30w, I'd leave it until the 50 hour change. Or change it to 10-30w (or whatever Kubota advises) just to be sure.

My dealer was adamant about not draining the factory fill before the 50 hour change. One of the reasons I got the block heater for cold weather starts. Much better for the engine IMHO.

BTW, nothing is better for cold weather starts than a true synthetic.

Synthetic!

The nice thing about synthetic is the reverse psychology of it...a 10W30 acts like a thinner 10 weight oil in the winter and has the protection of a 30 weight in the summer. However, I would put off that change until December (as the real cold will not have set in yet) and do some of those jobs you have been meaning to do on your tractor as the break in isn't complete. Or if you changed to synth now, I would opt to change it sooner than annually as you may have some break in debris in it.

My dealer said it was serviced with 15W-40 new, and that's what they always use. I went 48.5 hours before the first change. I put a 10W-30 synthetic blend in it. Next oil change will be 5W-40 synthetic.

I can tell the difference between the 15w-40 and the 10W-30 on a cold morning and it does not get that cold around here this time of year.

I would drain the 15W-40 and replace it with a diesel rated 10W-30 and replace it and filter at 50 hours.

Thanks all for the replys. Which 10-30 diesel rated synthetic are you using? Most of what I've seen out there is 5-40 or 15-40.
