What is the capacity of the hydraulic/transmission on a JD 970 with filter change? Also does it matter which plug you use to drain, there appears to be two.

It's been a few years since I replaced the hyd oil on my 970 TLB... IIRC there were 2 drain plugs - one in front of the other and they more or less straddled the axles.
I think I dropped both plugs just to be sure I got everything drained. And even then; when I opened the sump filter cap (3 bolts) I got a gush of hyd fluid down my arm!
After cleaning the sump screen filter, I installed a new, hyd oil heater into the center of the filter cap. Made a huge difference in the winter months! The steering, FEL and 3pt were all much happier when it was minus 10,20,30 below!!

pulled both plugs and drained the oil, was able to find out online and through dealer capacity is 5.5 gallons. Added a 5 gallon bucket and two quarts and nothing on dipstick, with additional two qts brings it up to the very bottom of add mark on dipstick. Add more??

Unfortunately, the fill/drain capacities in the manual don't necessarily jibe with all situations. It's been my experience that I've been both "short and long" with the hydraulic systems on my 970, 110 TLB and even my ol' 9N.
I get the fluid into the hatch mark range and run the tractor through the hyd functions. Loader, 3pt and steering, etc. Let sit for 3-4 hours and check it again. Add hyd fluid to bring it to 75-80% range on the dipstick hatch mark.
