Oil Change on the 6000

I changed the oil in 6000 today (originally changed at 21 hours and now again at 57). Everything went fine draining the old stuff, but when I went to unscrew the filter, the water jacket/oil cooler that sits just above the filter wanted to turn with the filter. I didn't want to pull this off as there are two lines to the radiator attached to this cooler with rubber "L" shaped hoses. Rather than create a bigger problem, I just refilled the crankcase (less one quart) and fired it up with the same filter. Anyone had this happen on their 4500/5500/6000/6500?? Bottom line here, is that I'll wait till warmer weather try to get it off as its about 30 F out right now. BobG in VA

Mine gave me no trouble when I changed it in warm weather, maybe the cold is causing the o-ring to stick?? I will certainly look at mine, like you, when it warms up again...also doubt that there will be any harm in running it like that for now but check occassionaly for leaks. Chet

Had the same problem with my 5500. I finally go the filter off but am concerned if this will happen every time. Any suggestions!!

Sorry for not posting earlier about the filter change. I asked around on a couple of other forums. One fella with a Ford F250 diesel said he couldn't budge his oil filter until the engine was up to operating temp. I tried this on the 6000 and what do you know...It worked. It unscrewed with a moderate amount of "torque" and the surrounding equipment (water jacket, etc) didn't turn with it. Run it up to temp before you put the filter wrench on it. I think you will be OK at that point. Bobg in VA

It looks like they paint the engine after all the filters are installed. I'm wonderin if the paint is helping to seal the filters on.

I didn't have any problems getting mine off but some have. Only recommendation is to have the engine at, or close to operating temp before attempting removal.

I would think that you would want to make sure that the engine is hot before changing the oil. It causes the contaminants to be suspended in the oil, and when you drain it, out they go. At least that is the theory behind changing the oil in the car when its hot.
