Hi everyone,

I was hoping to get some input on this tractor that I'm looking at buying. If you take a look at the pic I've attached you will find a 4wd B7100 that is dropping a bit of oil on the belly mower right under the drive shaft, and to me the side of the motor looks a bit wet. Can you guys comment and maybe speculate what the problem might be? Thanks!

It's pretty hard to tell from the picture but it doesn't look like it's a new or steady puddle. Maybe spillage from oil adding or changing? Looks like about the right area for spills. My b6100's engine looks a bit oily to, I think this is pretty typical of a 20+ year old diesel.

It looks like the u-joint cover on the drive shaft is leaking. If it's not leaking much, I wouldn't worry about it myself. Wipe it dry with a clean rag. check the rag and see how much is on it and what the mud to oil ratio is. For this check, the more the mud the better. On the other hand, if there is a zerk (grease) fitting on the u-joint, then it could simply be overfilled. Also, u-joints without zerk fittings need a needle to pierce the cover and get grease inside. This will leave little holes for hot grease to leak out.

But, if the grease has leaked out and the u-joint goes dry, you'll have to renew the u-joint bearings and you can replace the cover at that time. That could be a minor or major problem--depends on how easily the driveshaft and u-joint comes off.

This is all remote control opinions. It's really hard to tell what the real cause is. If you have a good friend that is handy with cars have them come and take a look. You really need to poke about a bit to get a getter guess than what I've given you here.

Is it oil or diesel fuel or is it possible to tell?

Wipe or wash everything down nice and clean and then see what happens. Also check the oil level in the front differential.

There are times a bright light at night will be more effective at finding leaks than full sun and shadows.

Search and fix! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Get a little on your finger. Is it oil or diesel fuel? Could be a spill from filling the tank or leaking fuel return hoses from injectors if it is diesel fuel. The tank sits just above that spot on the other side of the battery thats visible.

Looks like it is below the fuel filter, could be that a rubber hose is leaking a bit. Also, the hydraulic fluid return line runs somewhere above that spot and it is a rubber hose with a hose clamp on it.

When I had my B7100 up for sale about a year ago I noticed a small oil spot on the driveway and found that one of the hose clamps needed to be tightened.

BTW, it is one of the older style B7100's since it has 4 front lug nuts, later models had 6 lugs on front wheels.
