Yanmar YM2200
I have a YM2200 and I was mowing with a brush hog for about 2 hours. When get finished and park it I had noticed oil dripping quite a bit from the starter. What could be causing this to happend? My oil pressure guage showed around kinda high around 105 which I thought was sorta strange since it has always be in the green. Any suggestions.. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Danny,

I don't think you'll find any kind of lubricant from the starter that would actually drip....

I would suggest washing the engine and that area when the tractor is cool, start and watch when it come up to temp. I think you may have a loose fitting, sensor or something to indicate a leak elsewhere.

I would also check engine oil level and make sure diesel is not diluting your crankcase.

Rear main / tranny input shaft seal .. leaking.. being slung by clutch around bellhousing/ leak out starter?

Sound guy is right.
I have had a few starter dribblers in the past, the only remedy is to replace the main seal. While you're at it do the throwout bearing too.

Of course, didn't think of that until I read your reply. Is there an inspection cover (bell housing) where you could take a peek with a flashlight...and maybe a mirror?

Can't believe I didn't think of that.

Regards Mark.

Only reason i thought about it is because on ford tractors the rear main / tranny input shaft seal and axle seals are the most prone to leak. And when it is tranny /rear main, we get drips from the bell housing drain. rather common on the old 50-60 year iron /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif.

Thanks for the replys but I think this may change the problem. I looked at this oil and come to find out it isnt engine oil like I thought. It is the hyraulic/trans oil that only starts to drip out of the starter after a couple hours of use. I checked my hydraulic fluid level that is located at the shifter and it is way to full. I have never added or changed that fluid and I think it needs to be changed since the color just doesnt look right to me. Any of yall know where I drain that fluid out at??

Danny:

See pic

Just bellow the rear axel's on both sides you will fine one bolt each side that a little bigger than the others, thats your drain.

One more thing.....theres a screen (filter) that should be cleaned while you have it drained, left side just infront of the rear tire...three bolts in a triangle pattern with a big drain bolt in the middle.

Sidebar, the two bolts I mention first are a better spot to drain.....there lower on the tractor. Anywho, thats how I do it on mine and I think the gray markets are the same...maybe someone will chim in here and correct me if I have lead you astray.

If you see a bolt on the bottom, and no particular reason for it to be there, it has to be a drain bolt /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif.

I mentioned both crankcase rear main seal, and tranny input shaft seal. Both prime suspects for oil in the bellhousing.. just have to figure out what oil you see.. then go from there.. looks like you have.

OK, but where's the "extra" oil coming from? And why has his hydraulic oil changed color? Is there an oil cooler tied to the cooling system? I had that happen on an Audi once, antifreeze was getting into the trans oil -what a mess!

It pretty much has to be rain water in the hy/tran fluid.

My very next thought, must have been a heck of a storm!

If the tractor sits out in the weather, it will get in there. Usually through a leaky shifter boot over time.

I am in the process of building a garage for my tractor, but untill then its outside. Yeah yeah cover it up or something huh which I now have done. About 2 or so weeks ago yeah we did get a **** of a storm with about 3 inches of rain and I guess that could explain the full off color fluid level. Look at my next post I have another question not related to this one.

The seal from his transmission is worn & leaks hyd.fluid, which runs down & is picked up by the flywheel & sprayed around the bell housing, which has an opening for the stater gear, then the oil drips into the starter & leaks on the floor.
say that 3x
