I bought a 2910i and am going to do an oil change and don稚 have books yet. . I found the dipstick, full, but very black. I think I should be able to locate the drain, I didn稚 look though. My confusion comes in that it appears I have 2 oil fill locations 1 on the top of the motor and one on the right side of the motor forward of the dipstick. Both say oil on them. Which should I use or does it matter? Are they both truly oil?

Yes any one will work ,They have two on some engines for different engine applications

It's an engine thing, nothing to do with tractors. Drain plug is on the bottom just like your car\truck and the fill is on top. Kinda silly to add a 2nd fill. Use the one that's easiest to use. It's black because it's a diesel.

Branson paints drain plugs yellow. You may have 2 engine drain plugs too. My 6530 has an upside down U shaped oil casting (pan) because the front drive shaft goes right through where a normally shaped pan would be. Therefore there are drain plugs on each of the legs of the U. Same for the front axle, one on each gearbox and may be one for the center differential housing...also there is a gease zerk there in the center for front axle pivoting that needs attention periodically....easy to see from underneath.

You need a C (compression) rated oil for the engine and if you don't know how much oil the engine takes, just use your dipstick as a guide which is usually the final answer to any engine having the oil changed. Fill it to the top of the full mark. Run the engine to get things circulating. Shut it off, wait 5 min. and top it off to top of full mark. I use Rotella T products but Delo and Delvac are popular too from other oil companies.

Same for all 3 JD (Yanmar) engines. The bottom one on the JDs is harder to get oil into it without the oil leaking around the lower end of the funnel, either at the end of the funnel or the top of it because of the tip involved to use it. You can get a straighter shot using the top one.

I quit using the drain plug a long time back. I use an oil extractor on all my engines. I actually did a test: used the extractor and removed the oil drain plug. Got NOTHING from the tractor's drain plug after oil extracting the oil. On all other engines, the extractor often leaves a tad of oil behind.

I used the lower one on the front of the engine. The DPF on my 3725 is larger than the muffer you have and makes access to the filler in the valve cover more difficult.

Somewhere on this forum I read about someone who filled the engine from the valve cover and the oil didn't drain down into the crankcase before the engine was started, and it was damaged. I don't know if that was the real problem. I could see on some engines that the oil drain from the top end might not be very large, especially if the engine does not pump a lot of oil up there. Modern car/truck engines circulate a lot of oil and have good drainage from the top end so this shouldn't be a problem for them. In any case, checking the dipstick before starting would ensure that there's oil in the sump.

BTW my 3725's dipstick is really long and has multiple hash marks on it, like five or six of them. I filled it the amount that the manual calls for and it goes to the top mark. That's where the level was when the tractor was delivered. Yours might be different,.
