Mihindra 4500 4WD, 2003
I recently purchased a 2003 model 4500 4WD with front end loader. Has 230 hours and did an oil and filter change. Following the instructions in the owners manual, I removed the crankcase breather cap to fill the crankcase with the new oil. Much to my surprise, it will only take a very small stream of oil, a stream of about 1/8", without overflowing. I investigated and it appears the opening of about 1&1/2" in the valve cover has a plate at the bottom with has very narrow slits around the circumference which prevents the oil from flowing freely. I finally drilled a small hole, about 1/8" into the cap of the oil container and left it draining overnight, rather than holding onto it. Any suggestions, is this normal with all models like mine? I there a better way to introduce the new oil into the engine rather than through the crankcase breather?

If thats what the manual says and there is no other opening I guess thats it. The metal is there under the cap to act as a baffle to keep the oil away from the filler/breather.

Seems line there should be someplace else to fill the oil though.

Good Luck,
Rob

I am guessing you are using a funnel and the end of it is sitting on top of that baffle, if you pick it up it will drain much faster. Have this issue on one of my machines and learned to hold the funnel up a little. If this works for you, then you could cut the side of the funnel where it would run out the side (of course near enough the end to drain in the engine).

Pull the dipstick out while fill the tractor with oil, as this will let air vent out of the block. This will help some, and that is the only trick I know of for it. Good luck with it.

I have a 7520 and had the same problem. Pulling the dipstick helps quite a bit. Still not as fast as you would like, but makes it tolerable.;)

Thanks for the tips. I will try that next time. I also thought I might try using a piece of thin wall tubing attached to a funnel and try pouring the oil through the dipstick hole which is about 1/2" in diameter.

I had thought about that also, but just pouring in at the oil filler with the dipstick pulled out to act as a vent worked good enough for me.
