Are the newer filters more concave? When i first shifted to domestic filters, they initially would not start. I had to unscrew the threaded nipple from the filter boss a few turns and then re-tighten it's lock nut to get the filter threads to engage the nipple threads...

My experience in the last year is Napa Filters are becoming junk. I take care of over 75 engines and do about 100 oil changes a year. I used some Napa Filters but the last 2 I bought for my neighbors Dmax had plastic end caps and threads?

I went back to Fram and Quaker State Filters. I know many say Fram are not up to par but how many are used every week? I have never had a filter failure or know anyone that has other than a few busted open from road debris or getting stuck.

What I am saying is the quality has gone down on Napa Filters. Cross it over to a Fram and see what happens. I am guessing they got a bad batch that are threaded wrong.

Further to what Chris has said, I used to get NAPA spin-on fuel filters for my old Mercedes diesel. Changed them twice a year. Then one day the new one I put on started blowing fuel out the top as soon as I started cranking. Turned out the gasket was twice as tall as the take-off. Wouldn't let the filter screw all the way into the housing. I took it back to NAPA, only to find all instances of that particular filter to have the same gasket. That was the last fuel filter I bought from them. Matter of fact, I don't recall the last time I bought ANY kind of filter from NAPA.

Poor quality control!

Yea, like I said I have had more trouble with NAPA Filters, which are Wix Filters, than any other brand. I have changed oil, tranny, fuel, and hydro filters on over 100 pieces of equipment for more than 15 years and the years prior to that I was doing maybe 10 oil changes per year. I have only had 3 issues with filters and 2 were NAPA and in the last year. I will not be back for filters.

The 1000 plus Fram and Quaker State Filters I have used have never given me one single problem.

To be fair, I've never had a problem with any WIX filters. But then again they cost more than standard NAPA filters. I think it's a price point thing; that is, NAPA specs their filters to a lower standard than the regular WIX line. So WIX in turn simply makes a lower quality line on which to paint the NAPA label. It's my feeling that the higher priced NAPA Gold and/or NASCAR Select lines may be the equivalent to the standard WIX line.

All I ever used was Napa Gold and they were the ones I had issues with. The fuel filters in question were $40 each and with plastic end caps???? I can get a Fram, AC, or Puroilator for $25-$30 and its all steel.

I'm a Donaldson and Baldwin distributor and we sell world wide through our internet store. We are crossing over more and more NAPA, Carquest, Fram, Wix, etc. filters because our customers are unhappy with the quality of competitive filters. We also sell and deliver to the mines, major construction companies, and fleets here in southern AZ and New Mexico and almost all use Donaldson for quality. We find that Donaldson is not only competitive on price but you can't beat the quality. Trying to save money by using substandard filters isn't a great idea.
