Oil filter wrenches required for service?

I've a chain wrench that I bought way back in 1965. It works well for very tight filters. Put as close to base as possible.

I've also a very handy 2 finger wrench for the little oil filters.

I've 2 steel strap type wrenches. They won't work on really tight filters. The seat belt one mentioned by another poster is probably a much better gripping one.

Using a metal strap filter wrench with sandpaper slid underneath will sometimes work. But definitely the nylon strap wrench will do the job. Constant pressure on the strap wrench will get the filters loose, and one can use a screwdriver to carefully force into the rubber gasket area to spray some penetrating oil or silicone onto the filter housing flange to get things started.
Some of the problem is the OEM original filters are installed on the engine then the engine is baked to set the paint. THis hardens the filter to the housing. Once it's removed it's never an issue unless one overtightens the next filter.

... I still vote for a seatbelt strap wrench.. you have compound leverage between your ratchet/breaker bar, and the body of the strap wrench that rolls the seatbelt up.. more than enough force to crush any filter housing on the market, gripping it tightly enough to turn it even oily. ...

One other question. I found a flow arrow on the hydro filter housing mounted under the left footrest. I did not notice this when first removed. My new maintenance manual on CD does not show which direction to mount. Does anyone know if the arrow points down towards the ground or up towards the sky when mounted? Seems to run ok, but don't want oil bypassing the filter or some other issue to arise because this is backwards.

Can't help with your question on filter direction, but for the benefit of others searching the subject of removal, I'll second the two HF chain wrenches that Buggs linked to in post #6. If clearance allows, I think the "vise grip" style may be the more durable of the two. You can extend the leverage with a length of 2" Sch. 40 PVC pipe slipped over the grips once locked.

Can't say which is right, BUT you definitely don't want to get it wrong. I'd call a Bobcat dealer and get it verified which direction is correct. For future reference, whenever taking something like that apart, check orientation, AND mark it so it can't be installed incorrectly.
