I've a chain wrench that I bought way back in 1965. It works well for very tight filters. Put as close to base as possible.
I've also a very handy 2 finger wrench for the little oil filters.
I've 2 steel strap type wrenches. They won't work on really tight filters. The seat belt one mentioned by another poster is probably a much better gripping one.
