If anyone could help me i would appreciate it - I have an ST 2040 satoh and would like to know what oil to put in the hydraulics,I have a neighbor who has a small compact massey that uses 80-90wt. for hydraulic & transmission.

You should be fine to use any "universal tractor fluid" that meets JD303 or IH Hy-tran, I expect. ATF, gear oil, or even engine oil would all probably work, with varying tradeoffs. The tractor hydraulic fluid is probably best, though.

In your earlier post about your machine, there were some tips and questions that may help us give better advice. What did you find when you got the engine number, looked for extra dipsticks, fill plug bolts, or anything else that may help?

Just about any universal hydraulic oil will work if you are draining and replacing all of it. NOT too many tractors use 90 W oil for hydraulics as it is just too thick. Most hydraulic oils are around 10W. I could find any recommendations for my Yanmar but since the made John Deeres at that time, I just went for the oil recommended for their compact tractors but I don see a lot of difference in it. When I asked my LS dealer about what he put in the hydraulic at his shop, he said just use any universal oil and it will be ok and that was on a new tractor.
