Hey we went to look at a Jimna 284 today. and there was oil flowing out of this part. What is it and what could cause it? It is on the right side of the engine.

thanks for looking.

That's the crankcase breather. Normally there will be a small amount of "blow by" gas (combustion gas that has gotten past the piston rings) which is a combination of combustion gas that mixes with and picks up oil mist from the crank case. The more wear an engine has is indicated by increased blow by. Engines that have not been maintained well or have excessive wear will collect a small amount of oil in the upper part of the breather and then the blow by gas will push that oil out when the engine is running.
In general what is shown in the photo looks like a lack of or poor maintanence along with engine wear. An engine with a lot of blow by "may" run that way for a long time, but will use engine oil, on the other hand, depending on the severity of the blow by the engine could be on its last leg too.
In a engine with little wear, there should be virtually no oil in the breather and no oil running out of it, just a little vapor coming from the breather.

If there was oil literally flowing from the crank case breather, check the hydraulic oil level. The hydraulic pump could have a blown seal allowing hydraulic oil to flow to, and fill up to overflowing, the engine crank case. Not a big or expensive job to fix

What Bob says is correct, but looking at that picture, it seems to me this is a long term ongoing situation. I think ditech is making the right point, I see evidence of lack of maintenance. Is there an air filter? How does it look? If it's been sucking dust it's a problem.

It could also be caused by ignorance. Unlike you - who actually asked what it was - the previous owner may not have bothered to ask. The oil breathers on my Chinese tractors went on my semi-annual maintenance list. They're called "breathers" for a reason, because the internal rotation of the engine parts causes alternating positive and negative crankcase pressure. Positive pressure "exhales", negative pressure "inhales".

Oily vapors are expelled on the "exhale", but the oil component sticks to the coarse filtration material inside the breather cup. The idea is that air escapes, but gravity eventually causes the trapped oil to drain back into the engine. Dust however, necessarily comes in on the "intake". It sticks to the oily surface of the filtration material. When that material gets too clogged, oil is not permitted to drain back into the crankcase. At that point, it is expelled with the vapors - resulting in the mess you now see.

A bad head gasket can blow raw oil out the breather as well. But that is manifested by hot oil actually being sprayed out. You'd see it coating the inside of the hood, and as wet oil running down the outside of the breather. This tractor simply looks like a case of an owner that didn't know to clean out the breather filtration material as required. I did mine twice a year, spring and fall.

Thanks for the information - Seems like too much work for a person like me who doesn'e know what I am doing. I need something that will work now - not after investing a bunch of money that may or may not fix the problem. I am continuing to look around. I will post my next questions in the Yanmar catergory. :)

So you want the good news or the bad news?

The good news is that Yanmars are fine machines... The bad news is that they have the same parts and need the same basic maintenance performed, just like any other tractor...

Good luck...

In your case I would suggest renting. Owning ANY tractor is going to require work.

I just don't want to start out with something that is already broken.

Renting won't really work because we are planning on using it to clean out animal pens so we will need to use it several times a week. Currently we are using a shovel and wheelbarrow on my side and my dad is using an old Kawasaki mule instead of a wheelbarrow - would be a lot easier on him to have a tractor.

You do not want a tractor to clean animal stalls, you need a small Bobcat.

You are looking in the wrong market. A small tractor takes as much room as a full size truck to turn around, way to restrictive for your needs.
