I have a 1999 LC665 skidsteer loader with a newer engine (not rebuilt, but factory new), which is discharging drops of what appears to be black oil from the exhaust. The engine has less than 10 hours total run time. When checking the oil from the dipstick, the oil is clear, the level is normal, and there is no sign of water in the oil. The engine also appears to run normally, except for the oil in the exhaust, which shows up within about 30 minutes of run time. It is a turbocharged engine, but the turbocharger also appears to be working as normal (no excessive noise, no sign of excessive oil in the inlet or outlet ports). Anyone had similar problems or ideas on what this problem is caused from?
Thanks

Bobby,

have no experience with your rig but think in general, oil in the exhaust has to be caused with exhaust or intake valve sleeve seal not sealing properly, and as a result causing oil migration in to the piston from rocker arm assembly. If that is the case, then I think you should experience blue smoke out of the exhaust pipe as well (burnt oil). I reckon if all the oil does not get burned some may exit the cylinder during exhaust stroke. Do you see smoke in the exhaust more than usual?

In those thirty minutes,is it idling or are you working it? Does the motor have much blowby? Did the machine sit for awhile since engine change or did it get used right away? What happened to the last engine? Would residual oil from that still be in your exhaust system? plowking

Thanks for the replys. In answer to questions, I don't see smoke until after 30 minutes or so of run time, which is about the time the oil can be seen dripping from the exhaust pipe. During this time, it's being worked, but not excessively. The smoke also appears more white than blue. There appears to be little, if any blowby. When I bought the machine, the new engine was already installed, and the machine does tend to sit awhile between uses---sometimes for several weeks. When I first noticed the problem, I removed the exhaust system back to the turbocharger to further inspect, and noticed the oil back to that point, so I don't think it's residual from the former engine.

Bobby,

Do you see sign of water/anti-freeze in the crankcase oil. White smoke as I know is a sign of burning antifreeze in the cylinder. That can almost always be attributed to the head gasket not sealing properly, warped head, etc. The fact it starts after 1/2 hr is may be because it needs some expansion due to a hot engine before it starts seeping fluid. Oil passage/water passage between head and the block may be where the oil or anti-freeze gets in to piston. Wait a bit and I'm sure some of the experienced guys hear may chime in, Rick, Soundguy, and Jinman:) How about it guys?

Hmm.. I was gonna say diesel slobber / wet stacking if he had come back and said lots of idle time... Maybee even oil seal in turbo.. but the white smoke is a different issue... i'd double check that cooling system, and maybee do a leakdown test on it.. and deffinately watch for water emulsion in the oil.. or oily sheen in the coolant.. or loss of coolant.

My experience has shown that kind of problem to be piston rings not sealing in one or all cylinders. If this a replacement engine, it could have been setting for a long time with moisture buildup inside engine. This creates rust groves around cylinder walls . OIl gets into these marks and then gets somewhat burned. It then comes out of the exhaust as a black oily residue. Which then runs down the exhaust pipe. Oil consumption is minimal. Its just messy. Sometimes it will clear up on its own and sometimes not.Is the engine still under warranty? If it is see the dealer who installed the new engine.

bobby, This sounds a little far out but it's verifiable on Caterpillar pages, often felspar (Bonami cleanser) was dusted into the intake of rebuilt diesels to help seat the rings. You may find just working it a litle harder will clear up the problem. When I idle my D7 for more than 15 minutes it will rain black oil for the next few minutes when it goes back to work. MikeD74T

Bobby, Are you running offroad fuel or highway fuel. The 1900 I have will slobber and smoke like you are describing if you put highway(bio) fuel in it. If I run offroad fuel it clears rite up.
