Oil is oil????

I can remember one service station (Star Gasoline) in Springfield, MO that sold re-refined oil in the quart bottles with cone spouts, as late as 1968 or so. Bought some gas there, but could not believe that the re-refined oil was good for anything and never used it. As I recall, the price wasn't that good, either. The gas brand and station both disappeared in the 1970's.

Roy, we didn't have the bottles, but we sold lots of re-refined motor oil when my Dad had the service stations. Quite a lot of people back then had old cars that either used or leaked oil and they usually asked if we had any "two-bit" oil. They were also frequently kind of apologetic and/or embarrassed about asking. The funny thing was that the two-bit (25 cent) oil cost us $.125, so we doubled our money - made twelve and a half cents per quart - on it, while on the "good" oils that we sold for $.40 and $.45 cents, we only made eleven cents profit, so we were quite happy to sell them two-bit oil if that's what they wanted. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I know is is up in the 200-300% range if you get it put in at one of the few remaining full service places. My wife got a quart of oil put in her car at a full service place a while back and I saw the bill. Was 3.75 for standard Chevron oil ! She is so good at spending my money /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Pays about .30 more a gallon for gas there too, I wish they would go out of business and save me some money.....
