Tractor
2002 Agco ST40
Posting for the first time. I have a 2002 Agco ST 40. Should be similar to a Massey 1440. Iseki turbocharged 3 cylinder. Here's my problem. The tractor has suddenly started smoking excessively. It is more obvious at idle. Seems to decrease with increased rpm's. Engine has started using oil quite a bit. 1 hour of bush hogging will equal almost 2 quarts missing. Power seems normal. I am the second owner of this machine. Bought it with 500 hours on the meter, only 650 on it now. Currently running Rotella T1 30w in it. Can anyone shed any light on this. My neighbors say it's the valve seals just showing their age.

Bad turbo?
Take of the hose on the pressure side and see if its full of oil.

Welcome to the forum. Rings, head gasket, valve guides? Excessive smoke + 2 qts of oil for 1 hour = a problem.

Thank you for the input. This is my second diesel. First one never had a problem. I'm still learning as i go.

Well, looks like the turbo is the culprit. Intake was full of oily residue and intake side of turbo was wet. Part number 3757062M91 in the AGCO parts book. Price = $2398. Anybody have other ideas on cheaper lines of obtaining a replacement. Or any consideration to converting tractor to run without?
My local parts source is a Caterpillar/Challenger dealer. He was shocked at the price also.

Try a turbo supply shop, some turbos can be repaired.

Was that the price of a exchange turbo? You can try to check if the oil return pipe from the turbo is open.

Agvg, the turbo is made by Mitsubishi, I've come to find out. Local turbo repair shop tells me that for a turbo this small, cost of parts will outweigh the cost of a new one. His price was $1550, with a 3-4 week delivery period. I'm assuming they are coming from Japan at that rate. Also, the return pipe seems clear. It was empty when I disassembled it. The whole shaft assembly inside the turbo has a LOT of play in it. The leading edge of the intake vanes have rounded off on the inside of the housing. Seems that the smaller the turbo, the more costly it is to fix/replace.

A total bearing failure, check that the pressure pipe has good flow of oil, what oil are you using?

I have been using 30W as per the owners manual. Switched to Rotella 15W-40 in the field when it ran low (what was readily available). Now using Rotella T1 30W.
