1964 Ford 4000 Diesel
This may seem like a dumb question, but I am having a tough time trying to get the oil plug out of my 1964 4000 Diesel. Everything I try using socket/pipe wrench seems to not get a good bite on the plug. Don't want to destroy the plug but its already starting to get chewed up. The plug is the square pipe plug with the big flange. Any ideas or similar experiences. Looks like there had to be a better option for a drain plug.

Sometimes they get super tight. Pretty sure you can get replacements, if I recall correctly. Get a big pipe wrench on it with a cheater... Also get a new gasket when replacing.

usually what happens is a lazy owner doesn't want to spend the 25 cents back then to get a ney gasket. or take 5 minuted to cut one out of thin paperboard. and then they tighten it to a million foot pounts instead to prevent leaks. OR they glue it on with some sort of gasket glue making it near impossible to take off. lastly. whent he plug is worn.. instead of repairing or repalcing. they run the plug with the stripped head back in and let the next poor fool deal with it.

you, unfortunately.. are the next poor fool.

There are a ton of ways to get it out.. from using a chissle to spin it out.. etc. but if you have a welder, simply get as big a hex nut as you have and tack it on and take her out. you can also use a grinder to grind a couple flats int he plug so that a wrench will pull her out.

whichever way you get her out. don't put that plug back in without further attention. like brazing or welding a nut to it. making better flatts.. etc... or simply replacing.

here's a like to a plug on my 950 that i had to weld a nut to to remove.

Thanks, and thanks for the picture. Good idea, I think I may try that with an old socket.

i didn't use a socket.. but a nut. but yeah.. welding a socket to it lets you use a driver handle on it. etc..

Exactly, I figure this way I'll have no slippage. Only weld failure. But I've been doing that for over thirty years so I think it should go ok. Thanks again.
