Oil & Fuel Oil Pressure Light

1979 B6100D 4wd. Operating tractor today and noticed the oil pressure light flickering at low idle. Changed oil (being overdue). At first seemed ok, but now light wants to remain on even at full throttle. Shut down and noticed top of engine smoking . (not normal) Oil Pump ??? Diesel motor (has clutch and trans.) aprox. 1200 hours . Thank's Steve

Sounds like the oil galley plug in the camshaft came out. The front of the engine needs to be removed to access the camshaft.

This could be a number of things. The oil galley plug is a known cause for loss of OP in the older D750 engines. If the top end is smoking, is it due to a oil leak or is just so hot that it is causing engine grime to burn off? There is an O ring in the head gasket(Left Rear) just above the oil light sending unit that can go bad and leak. This could cause OP loss if the leak is bad enough. The oil pumps on these engines seldom go bad. It is located on the front inside the timing cover.A spun rod or main bearing will cause loss of OP and will almost always cause severe engine noise. There is always the chance that the OP light sending unit is bad. That would be great because it can be fixed in about 30 minutes with a new one. You can check the actual OP by obtaining a 1/8 British Pipe Thread fitting( Autometer Metric Adapter #2269) along with a manuel OP gauge with hookups. Use this to make a test gauge then later mount it to do away with the factory idiot light. My manual specs 23 PSI as the min. OP allowable. Run the engine only enough to obtain a reading to prevent further damage.
