Oil Question

To anawer your question: No. That stuff is obsolete SAE SA rated and only suitable for use in things like door hinges.

I'm really surprised that they still have non detergent oil around. That's really old technology stuff. Just because the tractor's old doesn't mean you have to use old oil in it.

Even on my old Gravely, I converted it to Mobil 1. It was using oil, but after the 3rd change, it stopped.

We had a 1983 240D Benz that we drove for 25 years. When Exxon merged with Mobil, I could then convert it to M1 without being a traitor. Did. Did not use any more oil with M1 than before.

I'd put a good grade of 5w30 into your old tractor: M1, Castrol, Shell oil.

my dad always ran non detergent 30 in his 42 model h farmall.his thinking was that if you used a good detergent oil it would break loose all the sludge in the engine and cause bad problems.im currently rebuilding it and the mechanic put rotella 15w40 in it.he says since its all new inside theres no need to use non detergent

Non detergent oil is used in air compressors, pumps and the like, its far from obsolete.

I'm in VA and I had heard somewhere that non detergent straight 30 weight was the best alternative to the recommended IH "Low Ash" oil but didn't know if I should actually switch from my usual 30 w "HD" oil to non detergent.

If you want low ash, get Castrol 5w30 for diesel engines. May have to go to the nearest VW dealer to get it. It's what I use in my diesel generator since I cannot seem to find a good 0w30 or 5w30 diesel oil from other manufacturers stocked locally. M1 (think it's called "ESP": for exhaust system protection) makes a diesel ash free 5w30, but it costs more and seems only available online.
