I got some string rapped around my crankshaft up against the transmission and it destroyed the Oil Seal. I have the Oil Seal on Order, but my MF dealer is too far away, so I need help with replacing this part. Does anyone have the repair manual or sycmatic for replacing this part? Dealer told me it can be replaced form the outside and that crankshaft is retractable near universal joint. Any help is appreciated!! Thx

Is this just behind the plastic fan or against the rear of the engine?

When you say "crankshaft" do you mean "driveshaft"?

Yes "driveshaft" thanks! Yes, its just behind the plastic fan where the shaft goes into the transmission. I have that oil seal on order.

As I understand it, if you remove the bolt holding the driveshaft to the fan shaft, you can slip the driveshaft away from the fan and remove it. (Since the end of the shaft coming out of the HST has a groove in it, that bolt needs to be completely removed, not just loosened.)

Then, you can remove the fan (two bolts) and the fan's mounting bracket (roll pin). After that, if it's true that the seal can be removed from the outside, it appears there's a snap ring, an o-ring, a collar, and then the seal. My parts books shows the seal part number as 4267507M1, #37 in the drawing. Behind the seal there's another snap ring holding the bearing, so that should stay put OK.

Good luck!

mddorange: Yep, we got snow! Not as much as Boston & areas near the coast, but we got it. I imagine DH2310 got clobbered in Portsmouth.

An "Alberta Clipper" came by the other day and dropped another 4" or so up here on the hill. -5F up here this AM, but -17F in the valleys. Winter's starting to get real old now!

Wow was that helpful!! Thank you so much. It's just what I was hoping for :) Yes, tons of snow here and the tractor is limping along but getting the job done despite being under the weather :) I don't know how long you have had yours, but mine is 11 yrs old and I have worked it hard and its had very few issues. Thx again. Dan

Great. Looks like replacing the seal should be pretty straightforward. You might also consider replacing that o-ring, or at least be careful with it and check it closely for nicks. A hardware-store match might work, but perhaps a "genuine" M-F part would be best. (Not sure what kind of material M-F uses, but it could be teflon, neoprene, buna-n, etc. There's quite a few choices, and the wrong material might not last long.)

Wish changing my 4WD shift arm could be as easy!
