Oil type for '83 Ford 1700

Hi All,

I'm a little confused as to what type of oil to put in my machine. Reading owners manual shows 10w30, 10w40 for year round use OR 10W for severe cold below 32, 20W for winter use between 32 to 50F and 30W for summer above 50.

Then an internet search came back with a bunch of C-rated "Rotella 15w40".

Can you folks shed some light here? Thank you,

I have used "Rotella 15w40" as long as I owned my 1700. Never had any issues. It gets very cold and also very hot in Kansas.

They didn't have 0wxx back in those days. I'd go with 5w30 that you can get locally (or at least at a VW dealership) or order 0w30 ESP (Exhaust System Protection for DPF) online. The 5w30 Castrol stuff I got from VW $ is what is in our JD 2025R and Isuzu diesel now. When I run out of it, I'll order M1 0w30 ESP online.

Just get yourself some Rotella synthetic T6 5W-40 oil and all basis will be covered. The current T6 is now only rated for diesel service.
If you want to stock only one oil for gas and diesel service, Chevron's Delo 400 XSP synthetic is rated as CK-4/SN, 5W-30 and 5W-40.
