Being I am new to the Yanmar tractors, I am wondering how much oil, I should expect it to use. When I say use, I also mean the loss from leaking front or rear seals, which should be little, but probably some. And also valve covers. Plus I'm sure these little engines, even though very good, must use a little oil. They are most 20 some years old and used. So you fellows that have had them for a long time, or at least for some time, how much oil would be a normal amount to expect it to use in like the 100 hour change that I understand I should change at? I know it would be hard to say exactly, as the way they are used and how they were used over seas, before we got them. But I would like to get a ball park figure, as I havn't seen anything on this anywhere on here. Thanks Charles

Mine had the oil changed right before I bought it, and then at the next 50 hour mark. Never have had to add oil at all. Now it has close to 1200 hours on it.

My FX20D hasn't leaked one drop since I got it. It hasn't used any engine oil at all. I mow 4 acres regularly. I had a YM 1820D with loader and hoe before this. It was the same story once I did the usually start up service. I had it for over a year and used it in my plumbing business for hours at a time. These tractors are much better than you expect.

I changed the oil on my YM2000B when I first got it a little over a year ago and have only put about 45 hours on it, but it has used no oil that I can tell. I don't believe they are prone to oil usage at all, however as with old cars that I have had, I could put up with quite a bit of usage rather than overhaul it. As far as valve cover or pan leaks, that's easily fixed and should not be a problem. These new silicon gasket sealers are a wonderful thing.

The posters are right on. You should expect little or no engine oil loss. As for the axle and pto seals, you can expect some leaking in the future as these deteriorate with wear and the weather and you can live with it until you decide to replace the seals. That is a fairly simple task.

I agree, they just don't use oil.

I once had one that made oil though. The hydraulic pump seal was bad and it was pumping a litttle hydraulic fluid into the engine whenever it was running. Wasn't long before an extra quart appeared...and dissapeared in the transmission. Didn't take long to figure that one out.

I put over 130 hours on a 1401d with 2 oil changes and no oil use in between.

My 1500D at 23 years old and 980 hours has not used one drop of oil between changes. Knock on wood! These yanmar tractors are great!

On my ym1700 I have an extremely slow drip / leak at the oil sending unit.. but am to lazy to fix it yet.. and I have the new oil sending unit too.. go figure.

Havn't noticed any crankcase oil usage from burning/bypassing rings.

Water cooled engines expand/contract much less than air cooled engines because they operate through a much more limited temperature range. Therefore the operating tolerances are much better and the oil use much less. Additionally, because diesels run at relatively constant rpm the stresses are much more evenly distributed.

My air-cooled aircraft engine uses 1 qt every 8 hours.
