I don't put enough hours on my tractor to change the oil between seasons. Synthetic 5w-40 will be good year-around.

Welcome. My philosophy on oil is cost effective and change often. 14-40 in the diesels 10-30 in the gas. Always been concerned on the engines that don't get used often and hard I'm not burning off the moisture. So, I change the oil seasonally and since the hours never get high enough synthetic doesn't make sense. Also, it is a detergent motor oil for a reason, so I put the money into the filters. :2cents:

Actually, synthetics are also good for cold weather starting too. I believe people have been conditioned into unnecessarily changing their oil too frequently and end up wasting money. There just aren't too many engine failures due to oil failure out there. Oils are much better then in the past. I just stick with the manufacturer's recommendation for time change.
As for moisture, a good 4 hours of bush hogging takes care of that.

Well, the argument about wasting money only really takes hold when we are talking about a lot of oil. A gallon of oil to change the oil in my NH TC33DA is really a drop in the bucket. Now if we were talking about my 12.7L Detroit that takes just shy of 10 gallons for an oil change, then the argument would start to stick. IF it floats some folk's boat to change the oil a couple of time a year, or even monthly, it is really not a waste. They are in their comfort zone and they are willing to pay for it so that they sleep well at night. It might be a waste to someone else, but that just makes them different. We all don't need to march to the same drummer. And unless they are dumping the oil on the ground, the used oil is not wasted. It is recycled or used in a variety of ways. So there is no real waste of resources either.

Don't get me wrong - I'm all about a person's right to change their oil daily if it makes them feel good about themselfs. The forums purpose is to relay different points of view. I'm not here to convince you to do anything.

For the money you can't beat CHEVRON DELO 400 LE 15-40 oil and you can find it almost everywhere even at WAL-MART. If you are a fan of SHELL go with ROTELLA.
