Tell us your impressions.

Is the visibility improved?

Are there noticeable differences in the engine with the turbocharger?

What else??

I am jealous!

I have a texican buddy who'll be more qualified to answer...

But that won't stop me!!!

I would get the 8. Easier to maneuver, easier resale, stll plenty big. costs less up front.

But who cares what I think... What configuration is your 5420?

I guess I was unclear, I am hoping to hear from somebody who has owned a 4000 or 4010 series and gone to a 4020 series...

Mike,
First, I'll describe our place. It is just under 30 acres of horse farm.
We have been using a 30 year old Ford 3000 gas that died about 1 1/2 years ago and we have a Long 460 about 25 years old that does a good job but it takes all day long.
This purchase is a partnership between brothers who have been buddies for 52 years. My wife even claims that I love him more than I love her. (I told her, "Well I've been knowing him longer") Anyway it is coming as straddle mount, syncrotransmission, with dual remotes, 2 wheel drive since we are in flat country and can'y justify extra cost. Possible 541 FEL next year.
Would like to get opinion from your friend in Texas on shredder configuration.
We will be reconditioning about 15 acres into hay production.
Thanks,
SPP1

Now Mike you're assuming that a move from a TEN to a TWENTY is is an upgrade. There's a few TEN owners (well one at least) who's not sure it would be. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

But is would still be interesting to hear from someone who did make the move and can give their impressions of both.

I never said they were upgrades. I am a Computer Guy, don't you realize that in my fiel we are regressing?

Tim, did you get to demo a TWENTY when you were shopping?

No - they hadn't quite hit the dealer yet when my 4710 was located and brought back from Vermont. While mine was in getting set up the Twenties finally started to hit this area. I never even started one up but did look things over. Asthetically and vision-wise I didn't think anything improved but a lot of that is personal preferences. However no 400X loaders were around at that point so I couldn't compare that aspect. Since they had dropped draft control and that was important to me, I didn't pursue the Twenties any further.

Hi, this is Mike's Texican buddy Kyle.
Attached is a crummy picture of our families machines. Big brother/little brother. I refer to the 4310 as the "weed-eater"
You might laugh at first but we bought a very Heavy Duty 6 foot Bush Hog as our first line of defense against brush for 2 reasons. 1)We needed to cut down some heavy growth and
2)We have lots of Oak trees to manuever around and between.
Believe it or not, I can really put a strain on the 5420 in deep buffalo grass. (How can you get rid of that stuff?)
Now that things are relatively beat back, I wish like heck we had an MX 10. I did buy a 9' JD 350 sickle bar cutter and just got it working decent. I use it to trim around the pond. IT WORKS GREAT!!! I can do about 1/2 mile of shoreline in about 30 minutes.
Things to ask yourself when buying a new shredder.
How many acres to cut vs. how much you like being on your tractor? When its hot, you'll want to be on it less and less.
How tight of space do I need to fit through? A smaller cutter will tend to follow the contour of the ground better and not scalp as much if you prefer to cut your grass low.
On the other hand, a wider cutter will reach underneath a tree's canopy.
We have a 4WD and isolated station with PowerReverser. I absolutely love this tractor. I wish it had a cab....maybe someday...

Kyle,
Thanks for the opinion.
We have what is called bull grass I think we are talking about the same thing.
We will be spraying Roundup/Razor on it.
Was at a Pasture and Hay day at the local university farm Thursday and I have high school buddy you is experimenting with different grasses and controlling substances. When we come to controlling the pastures I will most probably contact him.
As for the cutter we are negotiating aprice of $3450 for a MX8.
