First, as I said at the end of my first post, thank you so much to all of you that helped me decide to get a loader, etc. Second, here is my decision, and a couple of questions. I have decided to pick up a TC24D, Hydro, Loader, Finish mower. That is about the limit of my funds at the moment. First, people have been talking about "R4" tires. What does that mean? Second, how big of a finish mower can I pull behind the TC24D? And third, for those who have the 24D, does it have plenty of power for everything you use it for, or have you ever found yourself needing more hp? I really want the TC29D but I cannot really afford the extra 2k at the moment. I initially was set on the 29D, but WITHOUT a loader. Now that everyone talked me into a loader, im going with the 24D with loader. Seem like a good move? Thanks alot!!

Naturally, I agree that I'd rather have the TC29D, but I also would rather have the TC24D with a FEL than a TC29D without a FEL. And I take it you're going with a rear 3-point finish mower rather than the mid-mount mower (good choice in my opinion), in which case I would recommend no larger than a 60" mower. R4 tires are also known as industrial tires; lugs on the tread are closer together than on R1, or ag tires (the old conventional "tractor" tires), the tread is flatter with more squared off edges, and the casing is usually thicker, stiffer, and perhaps less prone to punctures.

I have a TC18, which is the same chassis as the TC24D but 25% less horsepower, and I have no complaints about power. In fact, my salesman talked me out of the 24 because he said the Category I chassis really didn't need it for my purposes (ymmv). The only disadvantage I can see is perhaps some PTO implements that need more than 20 HP to run; can't think of any at the moment, but I remember seeing some.

Your choice of the Cat I chassis over the Cat II chassis (TC29, TC33) especially makes a lot of sense right now, because the 12LA loader has almost as much "power" as the 7308 which currently comes on the Cat II models, until the 14LA comes out.

The only place I could see being wrong is if you need a wider stance or heavier tractor for stability; then you might wish for the Cat II models. If you need stability that much, however, you might get a TC29D and find yourself wishing for the larger Category III models /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I bought my TC18 for the same reason you are giving - I wanted a Blue tractor, and I didn't want to spend the extra $$$ to get a 29, 30 or 33. In my case, I also didn't want to spend the extra $$$ for a 21 or 24. I have over 140 hours on the tractor now, and I am content with my decision. BTW, I couldn't do without the FEL.

Typhoon,

Originally I bought a TC24D with a FEL. It did everything I asked it to do both the 60" MMM and the 7106 FEL. My only problem was stability. I have some pretty good hills on my lot and I just didn't trust it. So I took it back and got a TC29D. It was only for stability.

As far as Horsepower. The 21 never bogged down. Like I said it did everything I asked it. I would go along with Bird, the 29 would be nice but without the loader, absolutely not. You won't believe the uses you will get out of it. After having a loader you wonder why you would ever buy a tractor without the loader.

i have a 24 hp(different color) and for most of my use it is fine. do i ever wish i had more hp? sure i do. but don't we all at one time or another. remember u buy the size tractor that is best for your needs 90% of the time. as BIRD SAID, would rather have a 24 with fel than a 29 without fel.in most case u never lack for power, it is traction and hydraulics that stop u from doing what u want, but the hydraulics are designed to only do what the size machine u are using can tolerate. hope i made sense /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You've received a lot of good advice, as usual. I was just wondering - if you really want a 29, would you consider getting the TC29 without the "D" (deluxe)? It would mean getting something other than hydro. I'm not sure if the regular TC29 has a shuttle shift transmission or straight gear, but the cost would be less than the D, although I don't know if it would offset the cost of the loader. Might be worth a look if your not absolutely locked into hydro.

Or, look at the TC30. It's not a Boomer, but you can get a hydro on it. It might meet your budget.

Just some other ideas to help confuse you even more! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
