.. I may have been in too high a gear.. Having a bit of trouble with the shifting thing too..I hope it's me and I'm not stripping the transmission/ drive train? out.. Thanks again!

Be aware the gear boxes in a lot of tractors are not synchronized. This means that you can't (shouldn't) shift gears while the tractor is moving. You need to come to a full stop and then shift gears.

Hi Moeart. Welcome to TBN.

The big things that set hydraulic oil apart from engine oil are 1] a lack of detergents to deal with the dirtiness of combustion, and 2]Extreme Pressure additive that enables it to work well with the gears in a transmission. As an educated guess, I think you should change the hyd fluid as soon as you can plan it. Use the premium hyd fluid from TSC as a safe bet. This will be healthy for the tractor and should make the transmission work noticeably smoother. You only need to change it every few years - unless the tractor is used a WHOLE lot. Since the bushog was low, be sure to check under it to see if the oil you put in is leaking or has leaked out. The seal on the shaft coming out the bottom sometimes goes bad and you can go on using the BH by putting a tube full of grease in the gearbox instead of continuously refilling with oil. Also, as a health gauge you can feel the gearbox after extended use. If it gets hotter than you can hold your hand on it is cause for alarm and should be checked out.

I'll throw my two cents in, but won't repeat the good maintenance advice above (Sorry fellow TBN'ers, Detective Killjoy of the Safety Police is here):

Your machine probably has few if any safety devices in place. Please read a few posts in the safety threads. Don't be scared of the tractor, but be fully aware of your actions and the tractor's potential. The posts that really alerted me, were the PTO injurys/deaths. Previous to that, I was WAY to casual working on or around a running tractor or spinning PTO shafts. Now my policy is that the tractor shall not run unless my butt is in the seat. And when running, bystanders are at a safe distance.

Be carefull and have some fun!

Do you realize that truly safe distance from a [raised] bushog running at full speed is around 1/4 mile?
