I was thinking while driving my tractor moving some snow around, getting pretty good at this here in Indiana but I am sure out East the tractor guys are getting much better than me :) Just doing some thinking, sense my Kubota is getting close to needing the Trans Hyd fluid changed, We all know how proud they are of there oil and yes why not spend the money on the so called best oil money can buy? Well there is only a couple manufactures that produce oil and in my opinion these barrels 5 gal buckets and 2.5 gal containers and 1 gal container and quarts go down the assembly line at the same place most all of them do ! My point is different labels same oil !! So just something i will throw out here and see what all of you guys think. Our oils for Trans hyd do have additives in them moisture rust and all the other confusing numbers. But what I was thinking from reading and doing some searching on all of these oils available that synthetic is more money, and I understand that, so my thinking is buy a good quality Trans Hyd oil for your Tractor and just add a full synthetic oil to the Trans hyd oil of your choice ? Most have all the other goodies and it would still be half the price or less than the high end oils. Maybe say on mine it holds 10 gals plus so add a couple gals of synthetic oil ? I know I am still going to here just pay the high dollar for the kubota utd oil but i don't care to !!! I am not cheap just hate paying for something that has a price jacked up to high just because it says John Deere or Kubota or Case on the bottle ???? Fire Away boys !!

Agree. I buy mine from TSC because it is closer than the dealer and a bit less costly. Check the container to see that it meets your brands specs. TSC meets them all.

I worked next to a place that got tanker cars of motor oil. Single big 5000 (from memory) gal of one fluid. They pumped it into quart containers. Some had a national brand of top shelf oil lable, some had economy store brand labels. All they did was transfer and pack quarts. No additives.

Buy the cheap stuff.

Don't think there's hardly any advantage to buy synthetic for this application. Hydraulic transmission oil is the most highly refined of any dino oil, and there's no contamination from engine blowby. Only advantage of synthetic would be just a tad lower viscosity at cold starting conditions. If you need to start it up and get it working full throttle pretty quickly, a synthetic may pay, but if you can start it up and just work it kinda gently for a little bit when really cold, no problem running a dino fluid.

My M9540 came with non-synthetic Kubota oil. In cool/cold weather, anything below 40 degrees, the power steering would squeal when first cranked. You had to let it sit and run for a few minutes, depending on temp before moving it to prevent this. I tolerated it for the first Winter.

When the second Winter rolled around I decided I would change the hydraulic oil. I bit the bullet and bought Kubota Super UDT2. The squeal totally went away. I think it shifts gears easier as well but will not swear to that. Might be suggestive. The hydraulic shuttle works a bit smoother.

Cost me $500 for the oil. Would have cost me $100 to put in the local brand "303" hydraulic oil. Was it worth it?? I can't say. Does it satisfy me?? Yep. When a hydraulic valve, pump, whatever, is squealing, it ain't good.

Will I ever know whether it was cost effective? No.

This maybe something to consider, but not totally the same scenario.

My 2002 GMC truck with an Allison transmission was recommended to use Dexron 3.
That is good but now they have Dexron 6 which is supposed to be better, some tell me, and they don't make Dexron 3 anymore.

I changed the oil per dealers recommendation to Dexron 6.

After checking out sometime later on GMC forums, they say that the seals on Allison's before 2006 will cause leaky seals using Dexron 6, and to use synthetic Transynde oil. The dealers probably don't care because they get to rebuild transmissions more often.

After researching farther I bit the bullet and changed to a higher price oil. I don't regret because I am sure about it. But who know, maybe I got ripped off.

The moral of my story is, don't take shortcuts with your oil because there may be factors you never thought of.

Your hydraulic oil pump was likely having some trouble getting suction on the oil, or the pressure relief valve was opening until the oil warmed a bit (by the pump). With better quality oil, the pump probably caught suction much quicker, and there was less being bypassed.

See my post on viscosity temperature plot of oils in the Oil, Fuel section of the forum (just down from this one) for a little more explanation.

You'll probably get a little more hp out to the PTO now and less lost by the pump.

good points as always, this is why I wanted to post this, and I knew I would get spend the money and get the oil made for your kubota in my case. This is fine and I know this but I also know from talking to people in the business of packaging these oils, is it worth any more because it says Kubota or John Deere or Ford and so on?? I guess we can talk about it all day and I still say it is all the same no matter what label is on the container. But this goes back to paying the electric bill for your local dealer and then some, then get the cheaper oil and hope all will be good and protected in your transmission and hyd system? It still comes down to price and a sense of well being! I know synthetic oil is basically better for colder weather but I am sure it protects better in hot weather that is what it does? =Just like the udt or sudt syn oil added mainly for colder climates, but also more protection in my thinking. Same as you vehicle I guess good oil is good when you change it at certain intervals, they now have synthetic blend same thing add syt oil to regular oil or full syn after a good break in, I use that in my zero turn mower but that takes two quarts in my opinion with the heat of a mower why would you use cheap oil to begin with? Well like all the old post on this all the same ideas and post are made, and this is a good thing. It sure would be nice if someone knows for sure where all this type of oil is manufactured at, like I posted on my post same place different bottles??

Don't mix synthetic with reg. oil

How do get a synthetic blend without using reg. oil?
