Did a couple of searches read a bunch of posts. Some said HD JD is better than Craftsman, what do ya'll think?

BTW new place is a flat acre with Est. lawn.

Reading posts and formulating your own opinion is the only way to go with the light LT's. I made a reference that most all the current LT models share around 90% of their parts manufactured from the same suppliers. We own an 8 year old Craftsman LT with a Kohler engine we use for our light yard work, and it has not had any problems at all. It is maintained, which I think is the key to anything lasting a long time above it being initially called, "the best," by any trade magazine.

Like your engine post, for tractors in the price range of LT's ($1000-2000) you will find them to be no more than comparing colors of apples.

I agree in that the different brands share a lot of components, so I would suggest it comes down to operator comfort. Does brand "X" offer more leg room, better seat, back support, ease of getting on and off, smoother ride, tighter turning radius, are the controls laid out for ease of use, is the mower deck heavy to lift? And these factors will be different from person to person, so there is no single correct answer. A tall left handed person will most likely feel more comfortable on a different machine than a short right handed person. I'd also be aware of where I would be able to get parts and service from, is there a reliable dealer nearby? That's how I would shop for an entry level machine

Check out a Craftsman Garden Tractor. I started with a Craftsman, 6 speed manual trans, 46" deck tractor, Kohler Pro 22hp engine. Cut well over an acre with slopes and pulled a cart overloaded with gravel, rock and topsoil on many occassions. Owned it for 6 years. In that 6 years I replaced the mower belt one time and the blades. The belt drive handled the slopes and yard cart without a problem.

There will be plenty of folks who will knock Craftsman tractors but for me the tractor did it's job year after year without problems. I did over maintain the tractor as I still do with my current tractors. Twice a season oil, oil filter and air filter changes, frequent greasing and once a year spark plug changes.

For starters on one acre of established, flat lawn the Craftsman may be a good choice. Good luck.:)
