I looked at a couple Woods rotary cutters yesterday. In place of rubber guards they had a solid metal guard...I am sure that would be more durable than rubber.

But I decided to go with a chain guard, becaue I though it would make BACKING into brush easier...

I could be all wet here...but that was the way it looked to me anyway...

For what it's worth here, I'm going to build my own chain guards (front and rear) for my 5' rotary cutter. It's 5' on the rear and 3' on the front and I'm using 3/16" chain in 6" lengths spaced 3/4" on center. The chain is $.79/ft. and I've figured I'll be buying 130 pieces and paying for 65' of chain. In addition to that I'll have 8' of 5/16" rod and 8' of angle iron, the size of which I've yet to determine. Beyond that I'm thinking of 8' of flat stock and maybe another foot of scrap angle for hangers.

Even when I figure welding wire, electricity, gas and depreciation on the welder I doubt I'll have $75 in this project using scrap steel at $.10-$.20 per pound. When I called and priced new ones from the manufacturer I was quoted about $250 shipped to my door. I thought that was not only a lot for chain guards given what they are, but also didn't want to spend $250 on chain guards for a $500 mower. Besides, it's a welding project not even I can mess up too badly. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Henro had a few too many and replied to you in a different thread. Since I have only had 2 and a half I thought I would cut and paste his answer for you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

( [I'm really confused at the moment...I thought someone asked what a henro was...here is the answer but I don;t knw where the question is...]

A henro is a person who walked the ancient pilgrimage route around the Japanese Island of Shiklku. I did this last spring. Around 900 miles of walking over six weeks...not really sure if I qualify as a Henro or not, since for me religion was not a part of it....but I think of myself as a henro anyway....
