Well, I went to an auction today. About 600 numbers were out, so it was pretty big. A Massey 231 with 45 hours on it went for $10500, which I thought was a pretty good price. A half ton Silverado in outstanding shape, 100k miles, 4x4, good cap, '93 model year went for 5700, again not bad.
I bought a 6' more or less wide 3 point disc that looks like it has mostly sat outside. I think I got it for a decent price at 135. There were 4 guys wanting it at the start, and the last bid prior to mine was 130.
It's pretty rusty on the surface, but the discs are all solid. They're 16" diameter, 5 per axle. It has mostly yellow paint left with a thin black pin stripe, but there are also parts that look to be faded JD green.
Does anyone know what brand it might be? Did John Deere ever make a small disc like it? All the adjustments are by bolt, no levers or anything like on the straight pull disc I had in Michigan. There are no weight boxes or anything. The thing weighs about 500 lb or so. It took 5 or 6 guys to lift it into the bed of my Dakota, where it just fit. I presume there are zerks on the thing somewhere but I haven't had a chance to do much other than lift it out of the truck and put it in the shop. The cutters all turn, and there is some grease showing on one set at the inboard end.
It doesn't appear that there is enough adjustment to the rear gangs to allow them to run very close to straight, which is how I plan to use it for slicing the ground open prior to overseeding the pasture. I figure I can adjust the top link so only the front blades make contact and gain the benefit of the weight of the rear set helping to cut into the ground.
