Here's a few pics of an ongoing project. I built this "loafing shed" about 10yrs ago from a kit that I bought from Lumber2. The kit came with complete drawings and materials. Since then we've used it to store hay in and as a run-in shed for our horses. We had always intended to finish the inside somehow and finally got around to it a few months back. Bear in mind that this is an ongoing project and probably won't be finished until late winter or spring of 2011. The posts are 4x4's, the frame work is 2x4's and the wall planks are 5/4 decking. I would have prefered some rough sawn lumber but no mills around here and there's always the budget.:)

Also, I took a few pics of the latch I made for it. It's the standard gate latch around these parts. Made of pipe, sucker rod, horseshoe, strap steel and the handle is a railroad spike.

I have a latch like that on the tack room except the handle is horse shoe shaped. HOWEVER, our filly fools around with it until she can get it open! We came back from a trip and found that a couple of horses had been in the tackroom! Fortunately, no feed in there other than a coffee can of horse treats (gone).

I've had to add a couple of eye bolts and a chain as backup security. So far, she hasn't figured that one out!

I only mention this as a warning if you have feed stored in there.

Thanks for the heads-up Ken. I know the kind your talking about. Uses a horseshoe as the handle. These equine critters are pretty smart when they want to be. No, there's no feed stored in the stalls. The only feed that is put in there usually gets ate shortly after you pour it in the feeder. I'm with you, good thing you didn't have a bunch of feed stored in your tack room or you'd come home to some foundered animals.

BTW, I've got so many different gate latches around here I think I keep them guessing and confused. If I think about it I'll snap a few pics of the different ones and post them. Nothing extravegant just good old fashion latches. Thanks again.

Teg and Ken, I got the second latch installed this weekend. It's just like the first one so any pics would look just like the other one.:D

I've started a new thread to show the many latches we have around here. Might be a little boring but wanted to share so maybe someone can get a few ideas if they're looking and it might prompt someone to share theirs. Heck, I'd like some more ideas for new ones so we can "keep 'em guessin'" around here!:thumbsup:

Nice Jay! Those boards look nice and strong. Great lookin' shed.

BTW: I suspect you will be back to add more fasteners to the 5/4 deck boards. They really warp and twist when the sun starts baking them. They may cup badly with only a single fastener in the middle.

You're spot on Jim! I've already started doing it since these pics were taken. This is my first time to install them vertically so we'll see how they do. I've also got it in the back of my mind to add a short roof to the front to shed a little water away from the front of the barn. I will probably slope it a little different than the other. Thanks of the heads-up!
