Old battery charger

If I sound like I don't know what I'm talking about it's because I don't - Husband gave me a project, so here goes.

Have an old Co-op Farm Home 6v and 12v charger Model 600-207 From Universal Cooperatives in Mpls which when bankrupt in 2014. Any idea how I can get a manual, or trouble shooting list, or coil reading in ohms?

Chances are that it's a rebranded Schumacher, do a Google image search for schumacher 6v-12v xx amp with xx replaced with what yours is. If you find something that looks like it, use that as a search on Manual Lib or ManualsOnline to see if there is anything for that model.

Tell him instead of wasting time and money on an old charger...he needs to get a Schumacher SP-1 2/4-Amp 6/12-Volt Automatic Battery Charger/Extender that has a desulfating mode...and Auto-Voltage Detection will automatically select the battery voltage....

He already has a new one. He's just one of those guys (retired mining electrician) who wants to find out why it doesn't work

I'm hoping the image comes through. It doesn't show anything about amps.

The image is in another message. I notice in the image there is a gauge that goes from 0-15 DC amperes. Googled images for that - lots but nothing similar that I saw. He just might have to take to the dump.

That appears to be a late 60's to early 70's before Co-op went to the Cenex brand on everything. It's a 10 amp, and one of the early automatic ones. Doubt that it will be easy to find anything other than an owners manual for these, but it should be fairly easy to troubleshoot. Maybe find a similar one at a yard sale (brand won't matter, they're all the same inside) for a couple bucks that works to get readings.
My first guess would be that if it hums when plugged in, the problem will be in the 6/12 switch.

Thanks to you all for your suggestions. Now this computer nerd will pass along the info to "Mr Fix-It" who thinks I can find anything, and the ball is in his court.

My first guess would be that if it hums when plugged in, the problem will be in the 6/12 switch.

Those old slide switches are famous for going bad due to design, people push in when the slide them and it pushes the guts backwards and wears the contacts, so would be the very first place to look, but also stick a voltmeter on the charge leads and see if there is maybe any voltage when you play with the switch - if so, replace the switch and try again - good luck, report back on how "Mr. Fix-it" makes out!
