Old Car

/ Old Car #61
When I first got into the "old car" hobby in the 70s, I remember the old guys at swap meets and auctions often lamenting with comments like "they didn't cost that much new!" which made me think how out of touch they were. Now I go to old car events and realize that the prices are all to high, Heck I saw a vette from they year I graduated High school with antique plates on it and it! It really threw me for a loop. All these 60's and early 70s cars where the $50-500 clunckers we drove in High school. Its hard to see them as $ 40,000 classics. To me old cars were from the 40s and 50s but I remember how excited I was to buy a 64.5 Mustang convertible 289 4v with 4 speed for $400 in 1974. I drove it a couple years and sold it for a whopping $900 in 1976. That was the last year detroit would build convertibles with the 1976 cad. eldo as the last american convertible (never say never). But a 20 year old car today is something from the 1980's not the heyday for exciting cars with cumbersome emissions systems and lowered compression ratios. I just couldn't get as excited to find a 1988 mustang convertible today as I was that 64 in 1974, to me 1988 is not an old car...
then there was the 1962 XKE roadster I sold for $3500 and the MGA MKII that has doubled in value since I sold it 6 years ago...but of course I kept my 401K in mutual funds, now worth less than half what I paid in, never mind the company matching dollars....maybe I should cash in and find a nice 65 Mustang convertible.... but then I remember teh wheel hop, things coming loose and it kept trying to rust....oh well, baring alzhiemers, I will always have the memories!

I wouldn't consider a 1950 Chevrolet to be an "old" car. My own first car was a 1946 Chevrolet that I got in 1956 and my parents' car at the time was a 1948 Oldsmobile. Now the 1932 Ford pickup truck that AAA has at the Dallas RV Show right now is something I'd call an "old" vehicle.:)

I bought a new 1971 Chevelle convertible back then.
It was the color of a new copper penny.
Top was white and inside was brown.
Was a nice sharp car.
Paid $$3300.00 for it.
UP DATE:
Back when I bought This new 71 chevelle convertible A Girl who I've known all my life bought a new red Mustang convertible.
At the time I made the above post She still had the Mustang as far as I knew but I wasn't sure.
I saw her one day last week so I asked her if she still has it and she does.
She said her and her husband just had it completely restored.
I can't wait to see it.
