Can anyone that had a 8 or 9n please share on how they are on gas, consumption or roughly acres per gallon, looking at a 9n with. 1952 8n engine, thanks

For 4or 5 years I cut 14 acers on 20 gallons of gas with a 5 ft bush hog using a 9n. the feild was about 18 inches tall. The n did the job but it was a fix or repair dailey f.o.r.d.. I moved up to a 34hp disel. I use half of the fuel and no repair headaches. the n's are around 20 hp. a bit weak. You will need a over run clutch on the p.t.o. and possible chain kit to keep the 3. lift where you want it.

The 9N has a 3-speed transmission whereas the 8N (which I had) has a 4-speed transmission. You don't say what implement you will be using, disc, rotary mower, etc. I think you would be far better off with a late model 8N.

The 8n is my favorite tractor but pto operation is not their strong suit. You would do better on fuel and spend considerably less on another make/model of the era like a
Farmall H. These wont give you a 3-point hitch but they work very well on a pull-type bush-hog.

On a 8or9 n when the wheels stop the pto stops. sometimes when you get stuck you have to disconect the drive shaft at the pto. so you can riise the three point hitch.

It sounds like you are new to tractors.
While the N series Fords are nice machines for light work, they do not have live hydraulics, live pto's and except for the 8N, they do not have position control. (They were designed for use with ground engaging implements, like plows and disks, and not necessarily for pto work.) That means when you step on the clutch, the hydraulics and the pro stop since it is a transmission driven pto and the pto drives the hydraulic pump and the pto shaft. Further, if you are using a pto driven implement with high rotating inertia, the implement will "drive" the rear wheels when you step on the clutch unless you ave an over running coupling (ORC) on the pto. Withou the ORC youwill have a difficult time stopping the tractor in this case.

If you can swing it, I'd recommend you find an older tractor with at least live hydraulics and pto. They are so much easier to learn to use than the older N series Fords or the Ferguson TO-20, -30 tractors. If you do buy a N series Ford, preferably a 4 speed 8N (it also has position control on the 3 pt hitch) and MAKE SURE YOU BUY AND USE AN ORC IF YOU ARE USING PTO DRIVEN IMPLEMENTS.

that is incorrect. the N pto will spin with the trans in neutral. what you describe is a ground speed pto.. N's had a tranny pto.

to the original poster.. you can surely get mowing done with an N.. it took me 10g to mow 10ac.. 1st gear, max throttle, on overgrown weeds. it usually takes me about 5g of diesel to mow the same amount, using a diesel.

thaey are deent lil chore tractors.. but for about the same $$ you can step up to a naa or 00/01 series and for a lil more a 3 cyl job.

anything 53+ will be a huge step up.. especially a 660 / 661 or 860 / 861

gets you live pto, and more hp.

MS carbs and holley carbs will give you more fuel economy than zenith.. but all will make the wheels turn.

if you have specific questions ask them.. I have just about all models of ford from the 9n/2n up thru the 4xxx 3 cyl model, plus a 5000 4 cyl. all mine run and are chore tractors..

Yes, same as any other transmission driven PTO. I can throw from any gear in to transmission without clutch if I don't have the engine revved up high. It is a PITA to back in the corner and use my brush hog, I call it "Semi Live pto wannabe":(:(:D
