I bought the socket tester. The two sockets I added the three prong adapters and ground wires to checked out fine. Out of desperation I'm running one window unit on an open ground.

Mike, I spent some time in the basement today and marveled is probably not the right word. Horrified might be a better word, or shocked (figuratively). Its just a real mess. A lot of the stuff that goes up into the house itself looks sort of okay. Its all knob and tube but it looks orderly and intact. But, my grandfather wired the rest of the basement itself (probably in the late 40's after he got back from the war) and it looks terrible. There are also a lot of later add ons that look pretty bad. Even the romex (looks like 'pre' romex) going to the 'new' fuse box is starting to crack and peel.

So yes, I'm going to insist on all new wiring and that all the old wiring be removed completely.

Yeah, I saw that crack-n-peel too. Scary. I also had aluminum in some places. Lots of splicing with no box or plates. Heck, some wire ran into my yard. The best one, I think I wrote about it on the board, was the extension cord I followed to a wall outlet.

:)

After your done, at least you will sleep safe at night not worrying about the electric.
