Don't know if this is true at all, but it is a hoot! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The USS CONSTITUTION ("Old Ironsides") as a combat vessel carried 48,600 gallons of fresh water for her crew of 475 officers & men. This was sufficient to last 6 months of sustained operations. She carried no evaporators to make her own water. However, let it be noted that on July 1798 the USS CONSTITUTION set sail from Boston. She left with 475 officers & men, 48,600 gallons of fresh water, 7,400 cannon shot, 11,600 pounds of black powder, and 79,400 gallons of rum. Her mission: To destroy & harass English shipping.

Making Jamaica on 6 October 1798 she took on 826 pounds of flour and 68,300 gallons of rum. Then she headed for the Azores, arriving on 12 November. She provisioned with 550 pounds of beef and 64,300 gallons of Portuguese wine.

On 18 November she set sail for England. In the ensuing days she defeated five British men-of-war and captured and scuttled 12 English merchantmen, salvaging only the rum. By 26 January 1799 her powder and shot were exhausted. Unarmed, she made a night raid up the Firth of Clyde. Her landing party captured a whiskey distillery and transferred 40,000 gallons aboard by dawn. Then she headed home.

The USS Constitution arrived in Boston on 20 February 1799 with no cannon shot, no food, no powder, no rum, no wine, no whiskey, and 48,600 gallons of stagnant water.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS, MY FRIEND! THOSE WERE THE DAYS!

Sounds like they preferred to use the water as ballast only.
Sure was not good for getting through those relentless days on the sea. Great story.

I read somewhere that one of the main complaints the Puritans had with their new home was that they ran out of beer and had to drink water. Makes you wonder what their beer was like. I don't think I could function drinking only beer even if it was Lite.

Now if my math is correct, that was 252,000 gallons of booze between 475 guys. So each guy drank on average 530 gallons while they were gone. It appears they were gone about 8 months( probably a little less), about 240 days. So that means they averaged about 2 gallons per person per day!!!

Isn't Ironside the restored ship sitting in the Baltimore Harbor?

I believe you are correct. However, it would appear that it derived its knickname, Old Ironside, not from the metal in the ships hull, but rather, from the condition of the crew's stomachs!/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

I thought the Constitution was in Boston harbor. Anybody know for sure? What I do know for sure is that "Old Ironsides" did not have an iron hull, but was made of good old oak.

If that's the one in the Harbor, it didn't look that big to be carring all that load... I must have it mixed up with another ship....... Tom

MJB -

We gotta give you that one./w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif It is in Boston Harbor. Here's the link Old Ironsides to the web site. I didn't take the time to read enough to see about the material in the hull, but as I think about it, I do believe you are correct on that count also. /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif/w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif
