old non-chain saw saw

Looking through the </font><font color="blue" class="small">( Chainsaw Husq vs Stihl )</font> thread reminded me of a saw I have only seen twice, once when I was a kid, and once a year ago.

My Grandfather had this saw. It had a regular chainsaw type powerhead on it. Instead of a bar/chain though, it had a "toothed" blade. It worked like a huge "sawzall". I remember watching my Dad use it back in the early '70's.

Anyone else ever see or use one of them? I was just a young kid when I saw it working.

No. This was very much a saw. The powerhead looked just like a large chainsaw. I remember it having about an 18-24" "bar". The bar though, looked like it had teeth like a two-man crosscut saw. It reciprocated just like a massive Sawzall.

They obviously didn't go over well...

The only thing I could think of would be an engine powered drag saw.

I've seen the kind of saw you're describing before too. I think my ex-inlaws had one in light blue or silver color.........can't remember the brand name tho..................

I'm guessing I saw my Grandfathers saw sometime around 1970. I remember my Dad using it to cut a log, but do not remember how well it worked.

I do not know the purpose of the saw. I can not imagine it being used for felling.

Interesting old saw though. Sure looks different compadered to a regular chainsaw.

Years back some of the rental places in my area had these. They rented them out for cutting RR ties and such rather than chainsaws.

We all know that RR ties are tough on chains. PArticularly used ties. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I guess they hald up better or were easier to keep sharp.
