Last year my parents gave me about 500 slides. Almost all the photos they ever took. Of course, these days we dont have the slide projector and so I have been scanning them.I purchased an epson v200 and have been using 1200 dpi resolution. The results I think are very good. But what is more important is that when you look at the group photos you suddenly realize that most of the people have passed on. If I couldnt call my parents, as they are the only surviving members of their generation, and ask who these people are all that information would be lost. I know its a chore as it is a slow process, but if you are in the same situation as myself dont delay. I promise you wont regret it

Right now, I have four big boxes of photos in my livingroom... ...most with no names. :(

Good move deereman. We started looking at slides, and even some 8mm movies over Christmas but the bulb in the slide projector blew. My brother in law offered to scan the slides. You said the results were good, any chance to post a sample? I'll have to ask the brother in law what resolution he was planning on using. We have thousands of slides, but not all need to be kept, only the important ones. I think my dad kept every picture he ever took!

Slides - what a throw back  I remember as a kid the family times and slide shows.... my dad always insisted on slides, saying you can alway make a print from a slide but not a slide from a print... now that he has passed how do you sort through all that? Glad to hear they can be scanned as I am eager to make some sense of the many thousands he had set up in trays, all catagorized and ready for the next "show"....

:D Year before last, I gave out youngest daughter over a thousand slides, in the round trays, most of them were made with a cheap camera in the mid-60s and early 70s. And like your dad, I never threw any away.:D Our projector had broken, the brand no longer existed, and the trays wouldn't work on other brands. I also gave her several reels of Super 8mm home movies that were made when our daughters were babies (one of them will be 42 this month and the other will be 39 next month).

I had considered buying a new scanner and scanning the slides, but decided it would be too much work. Well, she surprised me at Christmas with two DVDs with both slides and movies; not all of them, but a lot. I have no idea what she paid to have those made.

I have one large suitcase full of old photos that belonged to my mother, many of which are photos of people I cannot identify. And we have a couple of thousand 4" x 6" prints made with a 35mm Nikon during our 6 years of full time RVing.

And now . . . lots of digital pictures on this computer.:D

Well, I discovered that the images run between 2-3 megs each.Too large for upload to TBN, but that does mean that the resolution is good and you could probably get away with lower ,say 600 dpi, which would speed up the process

Is that per slide or per scan? I assume you can scan several at a time? I think my Brother-in-law has a rack of some sort that holds several of them in the same position on the scanner bed. Makes it easier to seperate them in Photoshop later.

You can still resize and post using whatever imaging software you like. irfanview is a freebie that works well.

You cant use an ordinary scanner for slides as you need a source of light that goes "through" the slide. The Epson comes with a rack that allows you to put in 4 at a time and aligns it with the source light. The software recognizes each slide individually .At 1200 dpi the process take about 10 minutes for one cycle. Each image is at 2-3 megs. Thanks for the link to the freebie
